ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Coe College baseball team ended its pre-Florida slate with a non-conference road victory at WashU, handing the Bears just their second loss of the season with a 9-8 decision in a back-and-forth matchup. The Kohawks took an early lead with two in the second inning but the hosts scored the next three runs in the game to answer. The squads scored three runs each in their respective halves of the seventh but the Kohawks pulled ahead with three in the eighth and one in the ninth as
Jack Allison delivered the ultimate winning run with a solo homer in the top of the final frame. Coe's pitching efforts were led by
Nolan Schroeder who turned in a solid opening 3.2 innings before departing.
Xander Cloudy, Hunter Enloe and
Drew Osterman worked around some defensive struggles from the Kohawks in the closing innings with Osterman picking up his second save of the year. Offensively, Coe was led by Allison and
Ryan Thoreson who each had multi-hit performances.

- Three straight singles started Coe's second inning as Tyce Johnson, Allison and Evan deVally combined to make it 1-0. deVally's RBI single was followed by a sacrifice RBI from Ryan Thoreson executing the squeeze play with Allison trotting home. WashU pulled one back with one swing in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a solo homer. The Bears tied the game in the fourth, capitalizing on a hit batter and error to make it 2-2 with an infield single. WashU continued to surge in the bottom of the fifth, taking its first lead with a two-out single. Coe put together a three-run inning in the seventh, using a hit batter and a walk from Jon Wille and Jake Brosius to go up 4-3. Johnson capped off the inning with another RBI, reaching on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to make it 5-3. WashU regained the lead immediately, scoring three runs with one hit and two Coe errors in the frame. The back-and-forth action continued in the eighth as Coe responded, getting four hits and three runs with Eckardt and Brosius driving home runs. Eckardt delivered a clutch two-run double with one out and was followed two batters later as Brosius grounded out to make it 8-6. Allison delivered a clutch solo homer to begin the top of the ninth, lasering his first of the year down the left-field line. WashU clawed back two runs in the bottom of the ninth again thanks to defensive miscues from Coe but Osterman buckled down and got a groundout to end the game.
