CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College baseball team finished off an American Rivers Conference sweep Saturday afternoon at Bill Quinby Field, defeating the visiting Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves 8-4 in game one and 8-3 in game two. Coe took a lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opener but NWU responded with the next four runs, scoring twice in the second and twice in the seventh. The Kohawks, who had left numerous runners on base throughout the game, pulled one back in the seventh as
Jon Wille delivered a two-out double to make it 4-2. Coe's comeback victory was completed in the eighth with an explosive inning, scoring six runs on five hits to pull off the improbable.
Evan deVally had a game-tying, pinch-hit RBI before
Jake Brosius delivered a three-run double to blow the game open.
Xander Cloudy returned to the mound for his third inning of relief and worked a quick 1, 2, 3 inning to lock down the victory. Coe's offense kept the momentum rolling in the opening inning of game two, scoring six times with four hits. NWU fought back later in the contest, pulling within four in the eighth inning but an RBI single from
CJ Johnson put any comeback chance to rest.
Caden Richards picked up his fourth win of the season on the bump for the Kohawks, tossing six innings while allowing five hits and one run.
GAME ONE
COE 8 - NWU 4
Game Facts
- Ryan Thoreson continued his impressive junior season in the opening inning of game one, driving home Jake Brosius with a two-out double to right. NWU responded with two runs in the top of the second, loading the bases with three straight walks before a single and fielder's choice made it 2-90. The Prairie Wolves extended their advantage late in the game, scoring twice in the top of the seventh with a pair of RBI singles. Wille helped Coe get one back in the bottom of the frame, driving home Ryan Brosius with a two-out double. The Kohawks started the eighth with two hits in their first three at-bats, putting runners on second and third with one out. Thoreson scored the first run on a passed ball to make it 4-3 before the clutch pinch-hit from deVally knotted the game. Brosius then lofted a ball into no man's land in left field and cleared the bases, driving home all three runs with the fortunate double. Mitchell Eckardt concluded the scoring in the next at-bat, adding another insurance run to make it 8-4. Cloudy, pitching with the lead for the first time, handled business in the ninth, recording a pair of strikeouts en route to his third win of 2025.

- The Kohawks stayed hot in the early going of game two, scoring six times in the first inning with four hits. Wille and Jake Brosius reached to start the game before Eckardt made it 1-0 with a single. Tyce Johnson picked up an RBI to make it 2-0 on a fielder's choice and was followed by another RBI single from Jack Allison. Wille and Brosius finished off the inning with two more RBI singles, going back-to-back to make it 6-0. The game went quiet until Coe's fifth as the hosts added another run, getting a bases-loaded walk from Eckardt for 7-0. NWU stayed in the game with a run in the top of the sixth and two more in the eighth, pulling within four with one final chance. CJ Johnson delivered the knockout blow in Coe's half, driving home the final run of the contest with a single. Evan Bender went back to the mound after coming out of the bullpen in the eighth and handled duties, leaving runners on first and second as he ended the game.
