Baseball drops series opener at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Coe College baseball team dropped the series opener to Buena Vista Thursday evening, suffering a 12-7 defeat to the Beavers in the first of three games between the A-R-C's top two teams. Buena Vista came out on fire, scoring once in the bottom of the first inning before exploding for seven runs in the second to take control of the contest. The Beavers added three runs in the fourth inning and later held off a comeback from Coe which scored three runs in the seventh and four in the ninth before stranding two runners on base. The Kohawks outhit the Beavers 16-15 in the game despite the early deficit and defeat, getting six multi-hit performances and two three-hit games from Tyce Johnson and Jack Allison. Johnson and Will Hosch had two RBI each to lead the offense while Mitchell Eckardt, Jake Brosius and Austin Gomez had one each.

  • BV started the attack in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout after an early defensive mistake from the Kohawks. The Beavers ripped off five hits in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs while using a free pass and two hit batters. The first RBI hit was a two-run single to make it 3-0 before a bases-loaded hit batter made it 4-0. Two doubles before the end of the inning made it 8-0 for BV, taking early control after two. The Beavers continued to pour it on in the fourth, scoring three more on two RBI singles and a wild pitch. Coe pulled some runs back in the seventh, getting a leadoff single from Allison before a two-run double from Hosch and an RBI single from Eckardt. BVU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, taking a 12-3 lead with an RBI double. Coe continued to fight in the closing innings, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth before scoring four times in the ninth to cut the deficit to five. Brosius, Johnson and Gomez all had RBI in the inning but BVU escaped any further drama with a game-ending strikeout.
