Baseball drops final doubleheader of regular season at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Coe College baseball team was handed a pair of defeats Friday afternoon in its regular season finales, falling 4-1 and 9-5 to the Beavers. The Kohawks, who finish the 2025 season runner-up in the A-R-C, trailed early on in both games, spotting the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of both contests. Coe would tie the opening game with a run-scoring double from Mitchell Eckardt but runs from the hosts in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings were enough to give BVU the series victory after two matchups. The hosts polished off the sweep and secured the conference title in the third and final game, scoring once in the opening three innings for an early lead. The Kohawks would answer back with the game's next five runs but a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh gave the Beavers the lead and momentum for good.

GAME ONE
BVU 4 - COE 1
Game Facts
  • Buena Vista out hit Coe 10-9 in the opener and started with three knocks and one run in the bottom of the first. The Kohawks got the run back in the top of the third, using a pair of hits including a run-scoring double from Eckardt to level the game. Coe left runners on base in the fourth and sixth innings before BVU regained the lead, scoring once in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch with runners on the corners. The Beavers added another insurance tally in the seventh, pushing the lead to two with a sacrifice fly but the Kohawks left two runners on base to avoid any further gap. Buena Vista put the finishing touch on the win in the eighth, extending the lead to three with a two-out double after a hit batter.

GAME TWO
BVU 9 - COE 5
Game Facts
  • The Beavers again had a solid start in game two, scoring one run in the opening three innings to hop in front. Coe responded with a three spot in the top of the fourth, using a leadoff hit batsmen and a walk to set the table before Eckardt drove home one with a single. A wild pitch later in the inning made it 3-2 while Jake Brosius tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly. The Kohawks scored once in the following two innings, taking the lead in the top of the fifth before making it 5-3 in the sixth. Eckardt drew a bases-loaded walk for the lead but Coe left the bases loaded as BVU escaped the jam with a groundout. Coe got another run in the sixth with the bases loaded yet again, making it 5-3 on a defensive miscue from the Beavers. The Kohawks had a chance to blow open the game with two more at bats with the bases loaded but a strikeout and flyout ended the inning. Buena Vista exploded for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game with back-to-back RBI singles before a game-breaking grand slam to end the scoring.
