CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The second-seeded Coe College baseball team opened the American Rivers Conference tournament with a 7-2 victory over third-seeded Luther College Thursday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Sophomore starting pitcher
Jack Walsh was excellent for the Kohawks, tossing a complete game while allowing just five hits and two runs. The Dubuque native fanned a career-high 13 Norse hitters in his sixth win of the season and was backed up by his offense which had eight hits and RBI from four different players. Luther squandered an early 1-0 lead as Coe answered back with runs in the fourth and sixth innings on RBI from
Jack Allison and
Jake Brosius.
Austin Gomez added one in the seventh before Allison and
CJ Johnson broke the game open with back-to-back RBI hits as Johnson delivered a bases-loaded three-run double to cap off the explosion. Walsh returned for the ninth and gave up his second run of the game but bounced back with a pair of game-ending strikeouts. Coe advances to the winner's bracket and will face top-seeded Buena Vista tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM.
