Volleyball defeats Wittenberg in five; falls at No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Coe College volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Illinois Wesleyan Classic Saturday afternoon, defeating (RV) Wittenberg 3-2 before falling 3-1 to the No. 10 host Titans. The Kohawks and the Tigers battled in the opening match of the day, trading punches throughout. The Kohawks outlasted the Tigers 26-24 in a crucial fourth set to extend the match and then hit .429 in the final set en route to another narrow 18-16 extra-points victory in the fifth. Avery Beckett led Coe's offensive efforts with 19 kills while Maddy Maahs had a season-high 51 assists. Bella Rio led the defensive unit with 25 digs, her season-high and second-straight 20-plus dig performance. Illinois Wesleyan and Coe traded sets in match two, with Coe winning the second 25-21 to level the contest. The Titans dominated the following two frames, winning 25-14 and 25-15 while holding Coe to just 19 total kills. Overall, Coe hit .165 with 48 kills in the contest while Illinois Wesleyan hit .259 with 58 kills. Beckett again led Coe's attacking output, recording 13 kills while Maggie Furlong (11) and Maddie Harris (11) reached double-digits.

  • Coe struggled in the opening set, recording seven kills and nine attacking errors as Wittenberg raced to a 25-16 victory. The Kohawks responded in the second set, picking up a 25-18 victory behind 15 kills and just four errors. Coe limited Wittenberg to nine kills in the set and used an early point-scoring stretch to set the tone. Set three was more back-and-forth with the teams separated by just one point at 21-20. The Tigers used the lead and scored four of the final five points to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. Wittenberg and Coe traded punches in set four, with the match tied at four. A service error from the Tigers made it 25-24 for the Kohawks before a service ace from Kelsey Hansel clinched the contest.

  • Illinois Wesleyan built a comfortable lead in the opening set, going up 11-6 early on. Coe climbed back into the frame with a strong 10-7 run, closing the gap to two at 18-16. IWU finished the set on top, ripping off seven of the final 11 points to take a 1-0 lead. Coe and Illinois Wesleyan went toe-to-toe in the second set, with the Kohawks leading 12-11 around the midway mark. A quick 5-1 run for Coe forced a timeout but it did not stop the run as the Kohawks outlasted the Titans for a 25-21 win to tie the match. The Titans put their foot on the gas in the final two sets to cruise to victory, hitting. 293 in the third set and .289 in the fourth while forcing Coe into 13 attacking errors.
