CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa  – The Coe College women's tennis team was 1-1 in a pair of matches Sunday, defeating A-R-C foe Simpson College 7-0 in the morning before suffering a 4-3 defeat at Cornell College in the Bremner Cup match. The Kohawks were dominant against the Storm in the opener, cruising to a team point in the doubles matches as Maria Bello Escobar / Alice Tysoe, Cosette Gaines / Alli Hagness and Alexa Cohen / Giana Akins swept the competition with ease. Coe remained on top in the singles competition winning all six matches in straight sets, highlighted by Sophia Fain who picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one. Sophia Fain, Addison Leasure, Aisha Gurung and Makayla Baxter joined the fray in singles for their first wins of the day at number two and five while Gaines and Akins earned their second victories of the contest. Cornell and Coe battled in doubles to start the second match of the day. The visiting Kohawks secured the team point in style, picking up a 3-0 sweep as Leasure / Gurung, Tysoe / Fain and Gaines / Hagness completed the shutout. Cornell responded in singles for the comeback victory, securing victories at the number one, two, three and four positions. The Kohawks got two points in the singles competition from Bello Escobar and Tysoe, winning 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) at number five and six.
