Volleyball sweeps Augustana in home opener to remain unbeaten

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College volleyball team hosted its first match of the 2025 season Friday evening, sweeping Augustana College at Kohawk Arena 3-0. The Kohawks were on the mark from the opening serve, picking up a dominant 25-18 decision in the first set as Kelsey Hansel and Avery Beckett combined for 11 kills in the frame. Coe was forced to fight in the second set, scoring five of the last eight points in the set to secure a 25-21 win. The Kohawks wrapped up the match in style with their most dominant performance yet, hitting a match-high .269 in the period. Hansel racked up five kills en route to a 25-16 match-clinching victory. The senior from Edgewood finished with a team-high 13 kills while Beckett and Maggie Furlong had eight each. Elise Blaesing posted a team-best 11 digs on defense and Furlong added three block assists.

  • Coe raced out to an early 10-5 lead in the first set, forcing a quick timeout from the Vikings. The Kohawks continued to push the lead in the next phase, ripping off a 4-1 run to make the visitors take another timeout. Coe withstood a little push from Augustana that got the Vikings within five points, ending the period with five of the last six points. Set two was another strong start from Coe, building a 12-6 lead to force the timeout. Augustana responded this time out of the break, scoring seven consecutive points to take its first lead of the contest at 14-13. A quick answer for Coe got the momentum rolling again, getting back-to-back kills from Hansel and Furlong to restore a 19-16 advantage. The Vikings pushed the Kohawks, getting it to 20-18 but a pair of kills from Avery Beckett and an attacking error from Augustana gave Coe the set. Hansel put the icing on the cake in the final frame, ripping off five kills. Augustana trailed by six but made a comeback, pulling within one point of Coe's lead at 15-14. After a timeout from April Elsbernd, Coe sprinted to the finish line, using a 10-2 run in the closing moments to secure the victory.
