Loras rallies in second half to overcome Men’s Basketball in opening game of 2026

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Coe College men's basketball team suffered a defeat in its opening game of 2026 Saturday afternoon, falling 85-76 to Loras College. Coe and Loras were neck-and-neck in the initial 20 minutes, trading punches throughout. The Kohawks shook off a rough start that saw them trail 10-3 after five minus with the Duhawks hitting five early field goals. Coe responded over the rest of the first half, outscoring Loras 32-24 as Zach Strauss had a trio of first-half threes to help establish a 35-34 lead at the break. Coe pushed the lead to six in the first few possessions of the second half as an old-fashioned 3-point play from Jackson Bowman put Coe ahead 42-36 with 17:49 to play. This time it was Loras who came to life, finishing the game on a 49-34 run as the Duhawks hit 15 of their final 26 field goals to pull off the comeback. Coe's offense was led by Jackson Bowman, scoring 21 points while Cooper Nailor (13), Strauss (11) and Ryan Dolphin rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts.

  • Loras opened the game hot, ripping off a 10-3 run that featured five early field goals and three turnovers from the Kohawks. Coe responded with a 10-2 spurt of its own during the next three-plus minutes, spurred on by five points from Jackson Newell including a run-capping 3. The teams traded punches over the final half of the first, each scoring 22 points as Coe managed to take a 35-34 lead into the break. Bowman and the Kohawks extended the lead in the second half, scoring seven of the first nine points to go up six at 42-36. Loras responded with a dominant seven-minute stretch to take control of the game for good, ripping off a 17-4 run during which the Duhawks forced eight Kohawk turnovers while hitting six field goals. Coe steadied the ship momentarily as Bowman helped make it a two-possession game with a 3 at 53-49 but Loras slowly built the lead, going ahead 76-65 with 2:37 to play.
