Women’s Basketball drops regular-season road finale at Central

PELLA, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team suffered its second A-R-C defeat of the season Wednesday evening, dropping its final conference road game of the year 65-54 to the Dutch. Central opened the game with an impressive first quarter, outscoring Coe 17-12 as the hosts limited the visitors to just four field goals early on. The Kohawks roared back in the second quarter, dominating to go ahead 32-22 before a five-point swing from Central made it 32-28 at the break. Coe extended the lead in the third but couldn't get away from Central despite an 11-point advantage as the hosts scored 16 of the final 18 points in the frame to flip the score to 44-41 in its favor. An opening jumper for Coe made it a one-point game with 7:02 to play but Central finished the game on an 18-6 run, putting distance between the squads before the final two minutes of play. Taryn Kravig led Coe's offensive effort in the game, scoring 16 points while finishing just shy of a double-double with eight boards. Laiken Haas (11) and Quinn Grubbs (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts as Coe shot just 36.7 percent from the field with 23 turnovers.

  • Central went up 7-0 to start the game, hitting three early field goals while keeping Coe off the board. An 8-0 run for Coe got the visitors back into the game as Kravig hit back-to-back 3s to help spark the spurt. The Dutch regained control over the final three-plus minutes of the period, scoring 10 of the final 14 points as the hosts went 3-of-4 from the field to lead 17-12 after one. Coe quickly responded in the second, scoring six unanswered points to gain the lead again at 18-17. A 3 from the Dutch momentarily stopped the run but Coe stayed hot, using a 14-2 run to lead 32-22 with 1:04 left in the half. Central had the last laugh before the end of the period, scoring five straight points including a buzzer-beating jumper to pull within four. Coe started well after the break, getting a 7-0 run to push the lead to 39-28 less than three minutes in. Central took control for the rest of the quarter, outscoring the Kohawks 16-2 as the Dutch were a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor while holding Coe to 0-for-8 from deep. Coe made it a one-point game in the fourth quarter with a bucket from Caydee Kirkham but never got closer as Central sealed the victory with a 15-1 run, during which Coe was 0-for-6 from the floor.
