CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team picked up a season-opening sweep Saturday in a neutral-site doubleheader with UW-Stout, defeating the Blue Devils 11-0 in eight innings in game one before another, run-rule victory, this time 15-1 in seven innings of game two. Coe's offense got the opening run in the second inning and it proved to be enough for ace
Jack Walsh and
Landon Moore who combined for the shutout. The Kohawks ended up totaling 12 hits in the win, getting multi-RBI performances from
Ryan Thoreson and
Eli Elsbecker. Thoreson had a game-ending big blast in the bottom of the eighth for Coe, clinching the opener with a two-run bomb to end the game at 11-0. Coe fell behind in game two as
Nolan Schroeder surrendered the opening run in the first inning but stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage. Coe's offense picked him up starting in the fourth, tying the game with an RBI single from Elsbecker before a three-spot in the fifth. The Kohawks poured it on with back-to-back explosive frames in the sixth and seventh, scoring 11 across the two innings. A
Jack McMann two-run homer highlighted a five-run sixth before a three-run double from Elsbecker put the finishing touch on the victory.
GAME ONE
COE 11 - UW-STOUT 0 - 8 INNINGS
- The Kohawks opened the scoring in the second inning after threatening in the first, getting an RBI single from Elsbecker as he drove home Wille with a two-out single. Coe got more insurance for their ace in the fourth, adding three runs on three hits. Wille tripled two batters into the frame to drive home Will Hosch before back-to-back RBI knocks for Brent Yonkovic and Ryan Brosius made it 4-0. Coe continued to pile on in the next few innings, scoring at least one in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Elsbecker drove home two more runs to make it 6-0 in the fifth ahead of a successful double steal attempt that saw Jack Casey scamper home. Jake Mitchell picked up an RBI in the sixth, reaching on an error that allowed a runner to score from third to make it 8-0. Brosius picked up a sacrifice fly in the following inning to extend the lead to 9-0 before Thoreson capped off the offensive outburst with a game-ending two-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth.
GAME TWO
COE 15 - UW-STOUT 1 - 7 INNINGS
- Stout got on the board first in game two, taking advantage of a leadoff walk with a one-out RBI single but Schroeder did well to limit the damage as he stranded the bases loaded. Coe's offense came to life in the middle portion of the game, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take control. The Kohawks tied the game in the top of the fourth as Elsbecker drove home another run with a one-out single for 1-1. Schroeder stranded two more runners in the bottom of the inning and set his offense up again for the fifth. The Kohawks took the lead for good in the frame, scoring three times to go up 4-1. Thoreson opened the inning with a sacrifice fly before a wild pitch and walk gave the Kohawks two more. Coe added on in the top of the sixth, extending the lead to 9-1 with a RBI single from Mitchell, two-run single from Wille and a two-run jack from McMann. The Kohawks blew it open in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs on three hits. Thoreson grounded into a fielder's choice for the first run of the inning before a single from Hosch brought home Brosius for 11-1. McMann drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning for 12-1 ahead of a bases-clearing double for Elsbecker, giving him eight RBI on the day.
