ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Coe College baseball team suffered a pair of defeats to no. 20 Washington University St. Louis Saturday, falling 14-4 in game one before a 3-2 defeat in 11 innings in game two. The Kohawks led early in the opener, taking a 3-1 lead after RBI from
Ryan Brosius and
Luke Schieltz. WashU responded with an offensive explosion, scoring in the remaining innings of a run-rule shortened game as the Bears ended up tallying 17 hits en route to the big victory. WashU went ahead in game two with a run-scoring double in the third, but Coe took the lead late as
Austin Gomez delivered a bases-loaded single to score
Evan deVally and
Ryan Thoreson. WashU managed to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with a single and later won the game in the 11th with a bases-loaded walk that made it 3-2.
GAME ONE
NO. 20 WASHU 14 - COE 4 - 7 INNINGS
- WashU scored the opening run of the game in the first inning, but Coe quickly answered with a three-spot that included the RBI fielder's choice from Brosius and a two-run double from Schieltz. The Bears answered again in the second with one run to cut the deficit however, a double from Brent Yonkovic plated Eli Elsbecker to restore a multi-run advantage. WashU took control in the following three innings, scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth and five times in the fifth to turn the game on its head. The Bears continued to add with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh, clinching the victory with a run-scoring single in the final frame.
GAME TWO
NO. 20 WASHU 3 - COE 2 - 11 INNINGS
- The Bears struck first again in game two, taking the lead with a two-out double. Neither offense got much going in the game, combining for just five hits ahead of the eighth inning. The Kohawks found life in the eighth, getting back-to-back base runners after a Thoreson single and a walk for deVally. Gomez delivered the clutch hit two batters later, plating the pair with a single up the middle for a 2-1 lead. WashU was down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth but came up clutch, delivering a run-scoring single before Coe escaped any further damage. The Bears won the game in the 11th, getting two-straight two-out singles before back-to-back walks forced the winning run home.
