ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Coe College baseball team finished off a three-game series at No. 20 Washington University St. Louis Sunday, falling 10-4 in the final game to the Bears. The hosts Bears took an early lead with three runs in the first inning and despite one from the Kohawks in the second, WashU went on to extend the lead to 8-1 before any further Coe damage. Coe scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth as
Ryan Thoreson, Jack Casey and
Ryan Brosius picked up RBI but WashU's lead was far too much to overcome. The Koahwks had 11 hits in the game with
Austin Gomez, Jon Wille and Casey each recording multi-hit performances while
Jack McMann recorded Coe's other RBI.
NO. 20 WASHU 10 - COE 4
- Back-to-back free passes for the Bears gave WashU an early chance as the hosts made it 1-0 with a double steal attempt three batters in. A two-out double for WashU made it 3-0 before Landon Moore escaped further damage with a strikeout. McMann cut into the lead with a run-scoring single in the second but Coe left the bases loaded as a groundout eliminated further run-scoring chances. The Bears responded two innings later in the third, restoring a comfortable lead with three runs on four hits. Two more runs came home in the sixth as WashU put the game out of reach, scoring on a triple and a defensive miscue from Coe. Thoreson started Coe's late charge with a two-out double to make it 8-2 in the eighth. WashU got the run back and an additional tally in their half, making it 10-2 before the ninth. Coe's final runs came from Casey and Brosius in the ninth as the pair picked up RBI with the Kohawks leaving two runners on to end the game.
