Baseball opens weekend with neutral-site victory over Knox

DECATUR, Ill. — The Coe College baseball team got back to winning ways Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site matchup, defeating the Knox College Prairie Fire 7-3 in the opening game of three for the weekend. Jack Walsh got the start for the Kohawks on the bump, going seven innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing just eight hits and two earned runs. His offense also picked him up in the victory, scoring an early run in the second on an RBI single from Ryan Brosius before two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings gave the Kohawks a late push for the win. Brent Yonkovic, Ryan Thoreson, Austin Gomez, Jake Mitchell and Jon Wille all picked up RBI during the stretch for the Kohawks before Trevor Morse shut the door in the ninth in a sticky bases-loaded situation with just one out. Will Hosch led Coe's offense with three hits on the day while Mitchell and Wille had multi-hit efforts.

COE 7 - KNOX 3
  • The Kohawks struck first after a chance for the Prairie Fire in the top of the second, getting a two-out single from Brosius for the 1-0 lead. Coe's offense made it 3-0 in the sixth with two hits and a defensive miscue from Knox. Hosch led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brent Yonkovic brought home two runs later in the frame, singling to center to plate Hosch and Gomez who had reached earlier on an error. Knox grabbed both runs back immediately in the top of the seventh, getting three straight hits including a run-scoring double that made it 3-1. The Prairie Fire made it 3-2 two batters later, slicing the deficit to one with a two-out single before a strikeout ended the chances. Coe responded in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead for good, getting a leadoff bunt single from Mitchell before a run-scoring double from Thoreson. Gomez reached on an error later in the frame, allowing another run to score although the ball was already deep enough to make it 5-2. The Kohawk offense put the final touches on the victory in the eighth with two more runs, getting an RBI single from Mitchell before an infield single from Wille made it 7-2. Knox managed to make things interesting in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out but Morse did well to bounce back from an initial walk with back-to-back strikeouts to win the game.
