DECATUR, Ill. — The Coe College baseball team wrapped up its pre-Spring Break slate Sunday with a pair of non-conference matchups, defeating Lawrence University 9-5 in the opening game before falling 5-1 to Millikin University in game two. The Kohawks totaled 10 hits in the first game of the day, backing up a solid pitching effort from
Nolan Schroeder en route to the victory. The Kohawk offense exploded for five runs in the third inning and padded the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Lawrence pulled within two of Coe's lead with three in the sixth and two in the seventh but clutch RBI from
Jake Mitchell and
Luke Schieltz sealed the win as
Brady Alexander earned the save with 2.1 scoreless innings. Millikin used a late charge in game two, scoring four in the seventh and one in the eighth while limiting Coe to just three hits. Mitchell recorded the lone Kohawk RBI in the first inning, giving Coe a lead with a groundout in the first.
Landon Moore threw well on the mound despite suffering the loss, allowing one earned run while striking out five batters in 6.2 innings.
GAME ONE
COE 9 - LAWRENCE 5
- A leadoff walk from Brent Yonkovic and single from Ryan Brosius gave Coe the early chance. Lawrence threatened to escape the jam with two outs on a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout but a bases-loaded walk from Schieltz made it 1-0 and started the scoring. Jon Wille walked again in the following AB for 2-0 before a bases-clearing triple from Jack McMann gave Coe a 5-0 lead. Mitchell drove home the sixth run of the game in the top of the fifth, delivering a two-out single to plate Wille who singled to start the frame. Yonkovic extended the lead further in the fifth, driving home Wille again with a single to right. Lawrence made things interesting in the sixth, getting a three-run homer to cut into the deficit. It got tighter in the seventh as Lawrence added two more, scoring on a wild pitch and a single before leaving two more runners on. Coe put the game away in the eighth, scoring twice on a sacrifice bunt from Mitchell and a throwing error from Lawrence that saw Ryan Thoreson score for 9-5.
GAME TWO
MILLIKIN 5 - COE 1
- Jack Casey led the game off with a double to right and quickly crossed the plate two batters later as Mitchell produced a productive RBI groundout for 1-0. The game was fairly clean over the next few innings until the seventh when Millikin struck for four runs. An error started the inning before a one-out single put runners on the corners. Two runs came home on a groundout and single ahead of a two-run homer that put the exclamation mark on the inning. Millikin scored once more in the eighth, getting another insurance run with a two-out single.
