Women’s Basketball falls to Simpson in regular season finale, awaits A-R-C Quarterfinals Thursday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team suffered a defeat in its final game of the regular season Saturday afternoon, falling 68-58 to the Simpson College Storm. Simpson started well in the opening quarter but Coe responded well to stay close after 10 minutes. The Storm dominated the third quarter, outscoring Coe 23-12 while hitting 10-of-13 field goals and 3-of-3 from deep. Coe quickly got the lead back to single digits in the third quarter, using a 6-0 run to make it 42-33 early in the frame. Simpson managed to fend off any further comeback efforts from Coe, building a 14-point lead at the end of the third to provide wiggle room. The Kohawks had one last effort in the fourth, scoring eight unanswered to pull within six but seven consecutive from Simpson put the game away midway through the fourth. Audrie Helmrichs scored 24 points and was just shy of a double-double, finishing with seven rebounds. Kelly Knight was the final Kohawk in double-digits, totaling 11 points as she hit 3-of-8 from deep.

  • Simpson opened the game with seven of the first nine points, establishing momentum within the first two-plus minutes. Coe responded with 11 unanswered, ripping off the run in just under five minutes to lead 13-7. The Storm settled down ahead of the end of the frame, scoring 10 of the final 12 points to reestablish a two-point lead at 17-15. The visitors continued to fire in the second quarter, going 10-of-13 from the floor in the period to extend the lead before the break. Simpson outscored Coe 23-12 during the 10-minute stretch and took a 40-27 lead into the half. Coe looked to cut into the lead early in the third quarter, using a 6-0 run to pull within nine at the 8-minute mark. The Storm answered over the closing minutes of the period, regaining a double-digit lead before the end of the third with a 12-7 run. Coe had one last gasp to start the fourth quarter, scoring eight straight points to pull within six of the lead with 8:15 to play. Simpson iced the game in the following two-plus minutes, scoring nine of the next 11 to pull ahead 63-50 with 5:35 to play.
