Women's Tennis Spring Break Recap: Kohawks knock off Illinois Wesleyan, UW-Eau Claire & Southwestern in Sunshine State

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College Women's Tennis team finished off its Florida swing Wednesday, posting a 3-3 record overall with victories over Illinois Wesleyan, UW-Eau Claire, and Southwestern and defeats to Denison, UW-La Crosse, and Bethel. Coe started the week with a 6-1 victory over the Titans, sweeping the doubles competition before winning five of six singles matchups. The Kohawks made it two in a row the following day with a win over the Blugolds, despite falling behind after UWEC claimed the team point in doubles. Sophia Fain, Addison Leasure, Aisha Gurung and Alice Tysoe did enough in singles to get Coe over the line, winning in straight sets at numbers 1-4 for the victory. No. 30 Denison was a tough matchup for the Kohawks in the first loss of the trip, with the Big Red sweeping doubles competition before going 5-0 in singles. Leisure claimed Coe's lone set victory at number two, winning 6-2 to force a tiebreak where she fell just short 10-7. UWL handed Coe its second loss the following day, shutting out the Kohawks 7-0 with impressive performances throughout. Gurung picked up a set win for Coe in singles, winning 6-0 in the second set to force a tiebreaker, where she suffered a 10-8 defeat. The Kohawks battled with Bethel in their final loss of the trip, coming up just short in a 5-2 decision. The Royals claimed the team point with three wins in doubles before finishing the match with four wins in singles. Tysoe and Maria Bello Escobar managed Coe's two singles victories at numbers four and six, securing tiebreak wins 10-3 and 10-4. Coe ended the trip in style with a 5-2 win over Southwestern, coming back from a 3-0 defeat in doubles to win five matches in singles for the victory. Leasure, Gurung, Tysoe, Alli Hagness and Bello Escobar made easy work of the Pirates in singles, winning four matches in straight sets. Tysoe had Coe's best singles record of the week, going 4-2 overall, while doubles pairings Gurung / Leasure and Fain / Tysoe each had two wins during the week.
