CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Simpson College at Daniels Park this afternoon, dropping the opening game 5-0 before an 8-3 victory in game two. The Kohawk bats mustered just seven hits in the opening game and failed to push a run across in the shutout. The Storm opened the scoring with one in the first inning and padded the lead with runs in the third and fourth innings as the Kohawk defense was made to pay for a few costly errors. Simpson added an insurance run in the ninth and stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to hold on. Coe's bats responded in game two, scoring three times in the first with RBI from
Jon Wille and
Luke Schieltz. A homer in the second and a run in the fourth brought Simpson to within one midway through the fourth. Coe regained control of the game with two runs in the fourth on a pair of defensive miscues from the Storm before a two-run pinch-hit single from
Sam Wright in the fifth made it 7-2.
Trevor Morse tossed seven strong innings on the bump, earning the win to move to 3-0, while
Xander Cloudy tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
GAME ONE SIMPSON 5 - COE 0 - The Storm got a two-run RBI in the first inning, taking advantage of an error from Coe that let the leadoff runner reach. Simpson added one in the third on a solo homer and doubled the lead in the top of the fourth with back-to-back two-out singles. Coe had a chance to strike in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but two consecutive strikeouts ended any threat. The Kohawks put multiple runners on in the eighth and ninth innings but could not capitalize, ultimately leaving the bases loaded in the ninth with back-to-back putouts.
GAME TWO COE 8 - SIMPSON 3 - Wille drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first, setting the table for Schieltz, who delivered a two-run single for 3-0. Simpson responded with a leadoff homer in the top of the second and got closer with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Kohawks got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of two defensive miscues from the Storm to make it 5-2. Wright came through clutch in the bottom of the fifth, getting a two-run single after some small ball set the table for the runs. Simpson pulled one back in the eighth with a two-out single but an insurance run for Coe came off the bat of Ryan Thoreson in the bottom of the inning to end the chance for Simpson. Cloudy ended the game in the ninth, working around a leadoff error with a pair of strikeouts and a game-ending groundout.
