DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team picked up a midweek victory at the University of Dubuque Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Spartans 11-6. The Kohawks offense attacked early and often, scoring at least one run in the first six innings for a total of 10 in the first six frames.
Jon Wille, who totaled four hits and three RBI, started the scoring in the first with a run-scoring single. Two runs came home in the second on a defensive miscue from Dubuque before the Kohawks made it five with RBI from
Will Hosch and
Brent Yonkovic in the third.
Ryan Thoreson added another in the fourth with a sac-fly ahead of a two-run double from Wille that broke it open at 8-2. UD and Coe traded two runs before the end of the sixth with the Kohawks getting a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Brosius and another RBI single from Wille for 10-4. Coe got an insurance run in the top of the ninth and held on for the road victory in the bottom of the inning as
Brady Alexander surrendered one a sacrifice fly before a game-ending flyout.
COE 11 - DUBUQUE 6
- Coe and UD traded runs in the first inning as Wille opened the game with a two-out single to drive home Jack Casey. The Spartans answered in the home half, picking up a sacrifice fly to level the game at one. The Kohawks continued the hot start in the second, scoring twice on a defensive miscue after loading the bases to start the frame. A solo homer from UD in the bottom half of the inning halved the deficit once again as the hosts made it 3-2. Coe scored for the third straight inning, plating two more in the third on a sacrifice fly from Yonkovic and an RBI single from Hosch. The Kohawk offense made it 8-2 in the fourth inning, adding on insurance with three runs on two hits, including a two-run double from Wille. UD kept the scoring going in the home half of the fourth, getting two back on a two-run triple, but Evan Bender did well to avoid any further damage with an inning-ending strikeout. Coe got the runs back in the next two innings, scoring once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Brosius and another run-scoring single from Wille in the sixth. UD pulled a run back in the seventh, using back-to-back one-out hits to make it 10-5, but Xander Cloudy did well to avoid any further damage. The offense added a final insurance run in the top of the ninth, getting a leadoff double from Wille before a run-scoring double from Yonkovic made it 11-5. UD tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, getting a leadoff double but Alexander worked around the jam, limiting the Spartans to one with the sac-fly.
