Softball splits weekend-opening games with Millikin & UW-Stevens Point

DECATUR, Ill. — The Coe College softball team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Millikin, defeating the hosts 5-3 in the opening game before falling 7-5 to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in game two. The Kohawks fell behind in the opening game, spotting Millikin a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Coe responded later in the game, tying the game in the fourth inning before scoring four in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. The Kohawks' big inning started with an RBI triple from Keirah Wiseman before a sacrifice fly from Grace McCarty gave Coe the lead. Katelyn Bladecki added insurance later in the inning, driving home a pair with a single to left. Natalie Hitt handled the lead for the rest of the game, surrendering one in the bottom of the fifth before a quiet sixth and seventh. Stevens Point jumped ahead quickly in game two, scoring three in the opening inning. Coe responded with two in the top of the second but two runs in the third and fifth innings were enough for UWSP which escaped a mini jam in the seventh. Bladecki and Maddie Harris each recorded multi-hit games while Wiseman and Allie Decman secured the two Coe RBIs.

GAME ONE
COE 5 - MILLIKIN 3
  • Millikin grabbed the lead from the off, scoring with a one-out single in the first. Coe got the run back a few innings later, leveling the game on a defensive miscue as Hadyn Shoots put a ball in play that was misplayed, allowing McCarty to cross the plate. Millkin got the run right back, using back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning and make it 2-1 but some solid defense from Coe kept it a one-run game. Wiseman started the scoring in the top of the fifth, plating Taylor Drayfahl who walked earlier with her run-scoring triple. McCarty plated Wiseman two batters later with a sacrifice fly before Bladecki's clutch single gave Hitt plenty of room to work. Millikin got one back in the fifth but never got closer as the Kohawk hurler avoided any further damage in the sixth and seventh.

GAME TWO
UW-STEVENS POINT 7 - COE 5
  • Stevens Point got three runs in the first inning, loading the bases before a sacrifice fly made it 1-0. The big blow came with two outs on a two-run single to make it 3-0 but Coe cut down any other runners with an outfield assist at second. The offense answered with two runs in the top of the second, getting both on a defensive miscue from the Pointers that made it 3-2. The Pointers grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the third, using a two-run single to regain the multi-run advantage. Wiseman and Decman helped start the three-run inning in the fifth for Coe, making it 5-4 with back-to-back RBI before a throwing error allowed the Kohawks to make it 5-5. Stevens Point scored the game's final runs in the bottom of the inning, scoring both on a defensive miscue from Coe that proved to be the difference.
