Softball defeats Wooster & Spalding to round out opening weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Coe College softball team ended its opening weekend of 2026 with a pair of wins over Wooster and Spalding, winning 3-1 in game one and 8-2 in game two. The Kohawks got a strong pitching performance from freshman Morgan Hewitt in game one, backing up RBI Allie Decman, Marisa Vodicka and Jessica Meisinger as Coe defeated the Fighting Scots for the second time in two days. The offense exploded in game two, totaling 15 hits and eight runs in a dominant victory over host Spalding. Decman, Vodicka and Grace McCarty set the pace for the offense with multi-RBI performances while Keirah Wiseman added a three-hit performance to support a stellar effort in the circle from Natalie Hitt

GAME ONE
COE 3 - WOOSTER 1
  • Wooster got the opening run in game one after a slow start for both teams, scoring its lone run in the fourth on a defensive miscue from Coe. The Kohawks responded immediately in the top of the fifth, leveling the game on a bunt single from Decman that pushed Meisinger across the plate. The Kohawks took the lead for good in the sixth, extending the advantage with RBI knocks from Vodicka and Meisinger who gave Hewitt some insurance. Wooster did threaten in the bottom of the seventh with two hits but Coe's freshman did well to force a game-ending groundout.

GAME TWO
COE 8 - SPALDING 2
  • Coe's offense got it started early in game two, picking up two runs in each of the first two innings. The Kohawks got RBI hits from McCarty and Vodicka in the opening frame before Decman and McCarty made it 4-0 after two. McCarty stayed hot with her third RBI of the game in the fourth, driving home a run with a single to center for 5-0. Spalding slowed the momentum with a run in the bottom of the fourth but a three-spot for the Kohawks in the fifth all but ended the game. Wiseman, Decman and Vodicka each recorded an RBI in the frame with Coe totaling four hits overall. The Golden Eagles got their final run in the sixth, putting up one last fight with a two-out double. Hitt, who finished with nine total strikeouts, returned for the seventh and handled business, retiring the side in order for the win.
