DECATUR, Ill. — The Coe College softball team split a pair of games to wrap up its weekend action, defeating UW-Stevens Point 8-0 in five innings in its first game of the day before a 7-6 defeat to Millikin University in game two. The Kohawk offense exploded in the opening inning against the Pointers, scoring all eight runs on three hits and numerous defensive miscues.
Maddie Harris, Katelyn Bladecki and
Grace McCarty all recorded RBI in the massive inning with Harris totaling three including the eventual game-sealing hit.
Natalie Hitt worked an impressive five innings en route to her fourth win of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out three batters in a complete game shutout. Millikin scored three runs in the first three innings, taking a lead despite an RBI triple from
Jessica Meisinger. The Kohawks got back in front with two in the fourth and two in the sixth, taking a 5-3 lead on a single from
Allie Decman in the sixth. Millikin tied the game in the sixth and forced extra innings, responding with two runs in the home half of the eighth after a single run for Coe in the top.
GAME ONE
COE 8 - UW-STEVENS POINT 0
- Back-to-back walks set the stage for Harris who drove home the opening run with a single. Bladecki immediately followed with another run-scoring single before an error made it 3-0. Another error, this time in left field, allowed two more runs to score as Coe led 5-0. McCarty later drew a bases-loaded RBI for 6-0 before Harris delivered the final runs of the game with a two-run single. Stevens Point managed just two hits in the game, getting two base runners in the third and one in the fourth but Hitt managed to silence the Pointer offense.
GAME TWO
MILLIKIN 7 - COE 6
- Millikin grabbed the lead in the first inning, scoring with a one-out double. Meisinger responded for Coe, driving home Hadyn Shoots with the triple for 1-1. Millikin regained a multi-run lead with runs in the second and third, using a pair of singles to go up 3-1. Coe's offense struck back again as Taylor Drayfahl plated a pair with a triple of her own. The Kohawks took the lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits and an error. Drayfahl forced the first run home as she reached on a defensive miscue before a single from Decman made it 5-3. Millikin leveled the game with two outs in the sixth, scoring two on a clutch single up the middle for 5-5. Harris brought home the first run in extras, giving Coe a 6-5 lead as she reached on another error. Millikin had the last laugh, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth with four consecutive singles, including the game-winning two-run single with the bases loaded.
