LINCOLN, Neb. — The Coe College baseball team opened a weekend series at Nebraska Wesleyan in dominant fashion on Friday evening, defeating the Prairie Wolves 11-0 a seven-inning run rule. The Kohawks combined a stellar pitching performance from
Xander Cloudy and RBI from six different players to cruise past the hosts. A double steal in the first inning plated the first run before a lull in the action. Coe came back to life in the fifth after shutdown work from Cloudy, scoring four in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the seventh to blow the game open. Cloudy, who surrendered just two hits and struck out three, returned to the mound for the seventh and worked quickly with his third consecutive 1, 2, 3 inning.
Ryan Brosius was the lone Kohawk with multiple RBI, while
Ryan Thoreson, Jon Wille, Eli Elsbecker, Brent Yonkovic, and
Isaiah Epsey rounded out the run-producers for Coe.
COE 11 - NWU 0 - 7 INNINGS
- Crafy baserunning plated the first run for Coe in the opening inning as Wille and Elsbecker executed a double steal with the former crossing home for 1-0. Epsey brought the offense to life in the fifth, opening the inning with a triple to right before a groundout from Brosius made it 2-0. Wille made it 3-0 later in the frame with a run-scoring single before an RBI single from Elsbecker scored two as an errant throw allowed an extra run home. Coe got another double steal in the sixth and scored as a result with Brosius and Yonkovic swiping second and third before Yonkovic scampered home on another errant throw. The Kohawk offense put the game to bed in the seventh with five runs on three hits. Wille led off with a single ahead of a hit by pitch and walk for Elsbecker and Louis Smelcer. Yonkovic kept the line moving with a one-run single before Espey and Brosius earned RBI in back-to-back at-bats with a hit by pitch and another single. A wild pitch allowed each runner to advance 90 feet, with pinch-runner Kael Kurtz scoring for 10-0. A sacrifice fly from Thoreson brought the party to a close as the catcher plated Espey to extend the lead to 11-0. Cloudy made quick work in the bottom of the inning and slammed the door, going 1, 2, 3 for his second victory of the season.
