CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College baseball team picked up a midweek doubleheader sweep of the University of Dubuque Tuesday afternoon at Daniels Park, defeating the visiting Spartans 8-6 in game one and 10-6 in game two. The Kohawks erased an early 1-0 deficit in the first game, getting a game-tying RBI in the bottom of the first from
Eli Elsbecker before a four-run fifth inning shifted the momentum for good.
Xander Cloudy started on the mound for Coe, allowing just two runs, one earned, and four hits in five innings of work.
Jon Wille, Brent Yonkovic, and
Luke Schieltz all picked up RBI in the key fifth inning, while two more in the sixth for Coe provided key insurance for
Evan Bender and
Will Koll out of the pen. Game two was a game of momentum shifts as Coe raced out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to early RBI from
Ryan Thoreson and Elsbecker and defensive miscues from the Spartans. UD followed up with one in the third and a four-spot in the fourth, quickly tying the game thanks to some clutch hits and a defensive mistake from Coe. The Spartans took the lead in the sixth with one run, but the Kohawks had the final laugh, scoring five times in the bottom of the inning to pull away for good. Thoreson, Wille, Elsbecker and
Will Hosch all picked up RBI in the inning, helping Coe complete the final momentum shift of the contest.
