Women’s Soccer Moves Closer to Postseason Play with Win Over Central

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's soccer team defeated Central 2-1 on Saturday evening at Clark Field. Coe scored the opening goal in the 69th minute and looked safe but a goal from Central in the 87th minute tied it up. Brynne Sandfort scored the winner with a header off of a corner kick by Sydney Schroder with just 26 seconds left in regulation.

The Kohawks improve to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the A-R-C. Coe seniors Morgan Petsche, Lizzy Ward, Savannah Ruiz, and Hannah Schultz were all recognized prior to the last home game in their Kohawk careers.

Coe and Central played a scoreless 45 minutes to open the match. The Dutch had the first scoring chance of the game in the 5th minute but Coe keeper Kacey Baker was up to the challenge. The Kohawks managed four shots in the remainder of the first half including a pair of shots by Petsche which the Central goalie handled with ease.

The second half was more open and free-flowing but neither team could find the final touch. Coe finally broke the tie in the 69th minute when Petsche's shot from 12-yards out found the back of the net. Coe controlled possession and the pace of play for the final 20 minutes of play but Central continued to pressure. The Dutch got an equalizer in the 87th minute as Katie Wang's through ball found Erin Manion who finished to even the game.

Coe didn't hang its head despite the late goal and kept pushing forward. The Kohawks were awarded a corner kick with less than a minute on the clock. Schroder delivered a perfect ball into the box where Sandfort would head home the winner.

Next Up: The Kohawks hit the road for a matchup with Dubuque on Wednesday evening in their final game of the regular season. Coe will make the A-R-C tournament with a victory over Dubuque or a Nebraska Wesleyan tie or loss to Simpson on Wednesday.
