CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's volleyball team won 3-2 over Luther College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. Coe trailed two sets to none but won the final three sets 25-19, 25-13 & 15-11 to complete the comeback. The Kohawks end the regular season 15-17 overall and 5-3 in the American Rivers Conference. Coe locks up the fifth overall seed in the A-R-C tournament with the victory, marking the 10th-straight season of making the conference tournament.
The Kohawks were led by
Madi Parson (20 kills & 13 digs) and
Kate Tidman (26 kills & six digs). Tidman's 26 kills move her into a tie for third place for most kills in a match in Coe's record books while her 52 attempts put her second in most attempts in a single match.
Morgan Kluesner added 11 kills while
Elli Teeple had 56 assists and nine digs.
Luther, who was playing for a bid in the conference tournament came out hot in the first two sets. The Norse opened the match with a 25-21 victory in the first set and then cruised to a 25-16 win in set two. Despite the slow start Coe battled back and dominated the third set. The Kohawks won 25-19 while totaling 13 kills and hitting .171. Coe's comeback continued in the fourth set as the Kohawks raced out to a commanding 15-5 lead and eventually won the set 25-13 to tie the match at two sets apiece.
The Norse stayed calm despite the Kohawk comeback attempt as Luther jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final set. After a
DeAnn Woodin timeout, Coe ripped off three-straight points to tie the game at four. Luther then stopped the run and started one of its own, scoring back-to-back points to regain a 6-4 lead. The back-and-forth action continued as the Kohawks scored four-consecutive points forcing a Luther timeout as the score was 9-7 in favor of Coe. The teams traded points over the next few rallies but a kill from Kluesner put Coe ahead 12-9. Luther bounced right back, scoring back-to-back points of its own to draw within one at 12-11 but Coe scored the final three points of the match to secure the victory.
Next up: Coe has clinched the five seed in the A-R-C tournament and will take on Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the tournament.
