CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team fell 61-46 to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Tuesday evening. The loss drops Coe to 1-1 on the year while UWL improves to 2-0. The Kohawks led for a majority of the first half but the Eagles outscored Coe 17-11 in the third quarter and 23-8 in the final period to lock up the victory.
Coe was led by
Lexi Doyle and
Jackie Feldt who both finished with ten points. As a team, the Kohawks shot just 32.7 percent from the floor while committing 19 turnovers.
Coe and UWL opened the game exchanging baskets as the squads were tied at six with just over five minutes to play in the quarter. The Kohawks then scored six-straight points, including a pair of layups from
Sydney Schroder and Doyle. Wisconsin-La Crosse ended the Kohawk spurt with a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to four. Another bucket from Doyle pushed the lead back to six but two free throws for the Eagles made it 14-10 Coe after one period. The Kohawks shot 5-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe in the first quarter.
The teams continued the back-and-forth action for a large portion of the second quarter as Coe led 22-21 with just under three minutes left in the half. The Kohawks then scored the final six points of the quarter to hold a 28-21 lead at the break. Doyle had eight points in the first half with five rebounds.
Wisconsin-La Crosse came out on fire in the second half, opening with a 12-4 run in the first 3-plus minutes to take a 33-32 lead. Coe responded well despite the outburst from the Eagles as the Kohawks stopped the run with a layup from
Jackie Feldt. The teams would trade baskets for the final 3:30 of the frame as a layup from UWL's Cassandra Warmsley tied the score at 38 before the quarter ended.
UWL came out strong again in the fourth quarter, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. The Eagles held the Kohawks to just eight points in the quarter to lock up their second victory of the year.
