Women’s Basketball Picks up Bremner Cup Point with 56-46 win over Cornell

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Coe College women's basketball team secured a Bremner Cup point with a 56-46 victory over Cornell on Wednesday night. The win moves to Coe to 3-2 overall while Cornell suffers its first loss of the year and drops to 2-1 on the year. The Kohawks started the contest slowly but found their groove early in the second quarter to take control of the game. After shooting just 33.3 percent in the first quarter, the Kohawks finished the contest shooting 43.1 percent overall while holding Cornell to 25.5 percent. Coe had 19 assists on 22 baskets as four Kohawks recorded two-plus assists. Coe now trails Cornell 5-4 in the Bremner Cup Standings. 
 
Jackie Feldt led Coe with 14 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. The five blocks are a career-high for her and the mark moves her into a tie for eighth place in Coe's record book. Her twin sister, Jamie Feldt, finished with 11 points, seven boards, one block, and one steal. Sydney Schroder finished just one assist shy of her career-high, totaling eight in the contest while adding two rebounds and two steals. 
 
Coe and Cornell felt one another out over the opening minutes of the first quarter but a jumper from Jackie Feldt put the Kohawks ahead 6-5 with 4:26 to play. The Rams retook a two-point lead after a layup from Bella Gonzalez and a free throw from Anne Visser. The Kohawks responded with back-to-back buckets from the Feldt twins, putting Coe in front 10-8 with just under a minute to play. Cornell tied it up again with a layup but a Lexi Doyle went one-of-two from the line to give the Kohawks an 11-10 lead after one quarter. Coe held Cornell to just 23.5 percent from the floor and 1-of-6 from downtown while connecting on five field goals in the period.
 
Coe exploded in the second quarter, ripping off a 15-4 run over the first seven-plus minutes, extending its lead to 26-14 with three minutes left in the half. Cornell scored back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to seven points but a jumper from Jackie Feldt gave the Kohawks a nine-point halftime lead. Jackie Feldt scored eight points on five shots to lead Coe in the first half. 
 
The Kohawks and Rams traded blows early in the third quarter but back-to-back baskets for the Rams cut the deficit to seven with five minutes left in the period. Coe ended the third with an 11-3 run to regain control of the game and take a 43-28 lead into the final quarter. The Rams threatened in the first five minutes of the fourth, holding Coe to just one field goal while ripping off a 9-3 run. Leading 46-37 with 4:55 to play, Coe was able to control the tempo and wind the clock in order to lock up its third win of the year.
 
Up Next: The Kohawks return to action on November 26 when they travel to Buena Vista to open conference play at 5:30 p.m.
