Women’s Basketball Pulls Off Upset at #15 UW-Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wisc. – The Coe College women's basketball team knocked off #15 UW-Platteville 62-50 on Saturday afternoon. The win is Coe's second-straight and moves the Kohawks to 4-2 on the year while UW-Platteville suffers its first loss and drops to 5-1. Coe stayed with the nationally-ranked Pioneers right from the jump and outscored UW-Platteville 19-10 to pick up the victory. The win marks Coe's first win over a ranked opponent since the Kohawks knocked off #22 UW-Whitewater last season.

Jackie Feldt and Madeline Wilkins led the Kohawks, combining for 31 points while hitting 50 percent of their 3s in the contest. Feldt finished with 18 points, six boards and three blocks, her second-straight game with 3-plus blocks while Wilkins had 13 points, two rebounds and two steals, going 3-of-7 from downtown and 2-for-2 at the line. As a team, the Kohawks shot 42.6 percent from the floor while holding UW-Platteville to just 31.1 percent, the Pioneers' lowest shooting percentage of the season by nearly 10 percentage points.

UW-Platteville opened the contest with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of play but Coe responded back with a 12-3 spurt to take a 12-10 lead with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The Pioneers closed the period with two-straight buckets by Morgan Horstman, giving UWP a two-point lead after one.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter on fire, scoring nine of the first 12 points of the frame to regain an eight-point lead at 23-15. Coe got its first bucket in nearly seven minutes with a layup from Jackie Feldt, cutting the deficit to six points with two minutes left in the half. The Kohawks then ripped off a 9-2 run over the final few minutes of the half, tying the game at 25 at the break.

Coe flipped the script in the third quarter, starting the period with a 10-4 outburst to take its largest lead of the game at six points, 35-29. The Kohawks and Pioneers went back-and-forth the remaining six-plus minutes of the quarter as Coe held a three-point lead after three periods.

Both squads struggled to start the final quarter of play, combining for just five field goals over the first seven minutes. Wilkins hit a 3 to push Coe's lead back to four points with 3:33 left on the clock, forcing the Pioneers to pick up the intensity but UWP's shooting struggles continued for the remainder of the contest. The Kohawks were able to handle the pressure and convert on some late free throw attempts to lock up the victory of the Pioneers.

Up next: The Kohawks return to Cedar Rapids for their next contest when they host Simpson in an A-R-C women's and men's doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
