Women’s Basketball Survives Late Run from Simpson in A-R-C Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team opened its A-R-C schedule with a 71-61 win over Simpson on Wednesday evening. Coe led by double-digits for nearly the whole contest and withstood a late run from Simpson to lock up the victory. The victory is Coe's third-straight and moves the Kohawks to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the league while Simpson drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the A-R-C. Madeline Wilkins led the Kohawks with 24 points while Jackie Feldt added 18 points, 13 boards, six assists, and three steals.

Both squads struggled out of the gate, as Coe held a slim 4-0 lead with just over five minutes to play in the frame. The slow start continued for both teams but the Kohawks were able to capture a 7-5 lead prior to the end of the period.

Coe woke up in the second quarter, outscoring the Storm 27-13 while shooting 69.2 percent from the floor and 5-of-7 from the beyond the arc. The Kohawks opened the second quarter on a 13-4 run, extending their lead to 11 points behind back-to-back 3s from Wilkins. Coe stayed hot from the floor for the remainder of the period, stretching the lead to 19 points after two more 3s from Wilkins and buckets from Taylor Huber, Lexi Doyle and Rylee Claussen. Simpson added an old-fashioned 3 points play in the final minute of the half to cut Coe's lead to 34-18.

The solid shooting continued in the third quarter for the Kohawks, who kept the Storm in the rearview mirror for the period. Despite better offense from Simpson, Coe controlled the tempo and pace, holding a 54-34 lead after 30 minutes of play.

Despite the large deficit, Simpson refused to go away, opening the final quarter of action with an 11-4 run in the first 3:52 to cut the Coe lead to 13. A jumper from Jackie Feldt momentarily stopped the run but the Storm responded, with another 11-4 run to cut the deficit to just eight points with 58 seconds to play. Simpson began to foul Coe to slow the game down but the Kohawks were able to convert on the free throws to lock up the victory.

Up next: The Kohawks return to action on Saturday when they host Luther in another A-R-C contest at 2 p.m.
