ELMHURST, Ill. - The Coe College women's basketball team fell 61-53 to Elmhurst College on Tuesday evening. The loss drops Coe to 5-4 overall while Elmhurst improves to 4-6 on the year. The Kohawks outscored the Eagles 17-6 in the opening quarter of the contest but Elmhurst outscored Coe by 19 points in the final three periods to complete the come from behind victory.

Elmhurst scored the first point of the game with a free throw from Marissa Urso but the Kohawks responded with 11-straight points to jump out to a double-digit lead with 2:38 left in the quarter. The Eagles ended the run with a deep-ball before Coe hit back-to-back 3s, extending the lead to 17-6 before the end of the frame.
Elmhurst woke up early in the second quarter, ripping off a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to one point with 4:23 left in the opening half. Coe handled the run well, answering with a spurt of its own, regaining a nine-point lead with just over two minutes left in the period. The back-and-forth action continued as Elmhurst finished the quarter with six-straight points to cut Coe's lead to just three at the break.
Both teams settled into the contest in the third quarter, trading baskets and small leads for the entirety of the quarter with neither team leading by more than two points. The game was tied at 41 with 1:04 left in the quarter but the Eagles took a two-point lead in the fourth quarter after a jumper from Becca Gerke.
The teams continued to exchange buckets in the early portion of the final quarter, with neither team able to take control. With the score tied at 45, Elmhurst was finally able to put multiple scores together, ripping off a 14-5 spurt to take an eight-point lead with under a minute to play in the contest. Coe cut the deficit to six points with 36 seconds thanks to a layup from
Jamie Feldt but the Eagles handled the Kohawk pressure and converted the free throws to lock up the victory.
Up next: Coe will be back in action tomorrow evening when the Kohawks take on Iowa Wesleyan at 6 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
