LINCOLN, Neb. – The Coe College women's basketball team downed Nebraska Wesleyan 86-60 on Wednesday evening in an A-R-C matchup. The Kohawks led by eight points after two quarters and then outscored NWU 19-12 in the third quarter to take total control of the contest. The win is Coe's fourth-straight and moves the Kohawks to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the league while Nebraska Wesleyan drops to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the A-R-C.
It was a balanced performance for Coe as all 13 players who checked into the game recorded points.
Jackie Feldt led the squad with 14 points, seven boards, four assists, two blocks and two steals while
Destiny Smith added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench.
Coe and NWU traded baskets during the first four minutes of the quarter as the Kohawks trailed 11-10 with 5:44 to play in the frame. The Prairie Wolves hit a 3 to take a 14-10 lead but Coe then ripped off a 14-6 stretch to end the first quarter with a 24-17 lead. The Kohawks scored the final eight points of the period including a pair of free throws from
Destiny Smith and back-to-back 3s from
Alyse Southard and
Madeline Wilkins.
The Prairie Wolves immediately cut into Coe's lead to start the second quarter, scoring the opening five points of the period to get within two points of the lead but Wilkins ended the run with another 3. The Kohawks then scored back-to-back buckets with a layup from
Jackie Feldt and a deep-ball from
Mady Wahls to push the lead back to ten points with seven minutes left in the half. NWU responded with a 7-2 outburst over the next 2:49 to cut the lead five points but the Kohawks ended the quarter with a 9-5 stretch to extend their lead to nine points at the break.
The teams traded baskets following the halftime break but Coe started on a 6-0 run at the 3:53 to push its lead to 15 points with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Nebraska Wesleyan attempted to cut the lead before the end of the frame as Caitlyn Navratil scored three-straight points but
Rylee Claussen hit two free throws and
Sydney Schroder made a layup to put the Kohawks up 62-46 after 30 minutes.
Navratil opened the final frame with consecutive buckets to get the Prairie Wolves within 12 points with just 30 seconds gone in the quarter but Coe ripped off nine points to regain a 71-50 lead with 7:13 left in the contest. The Kohawks handled the pressure from NWU over the final few minutes of the game to lock up their fourth-straight victory.
Up next: The Kohawks will finally return to Cedar Rapids on Saturday for an A-R-C matchup with #7 Wartburg at 2 p.m.
