Women’s Basketball Falls 68-50 to #7/#8 Wartburg at Home

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team fell 68-50 to #7/#8 Wartburg on Saturday afternoon at Kohawk Arena. Coe and Wartburg battled in the opening two quarters but the Knights ended the second on an 11-2 run to take control of the game and secure the victory. Coe drops to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the league while Wartburg improves to 14-2 and 6-1 in the A-R-C.

Jackie Feldt (10 points, five boards, three assists and two steals) and Destiny Smith (10 points, four boards and two assists) led the Kohawks while Jamie Feldt added seven points, six boards, two blocks and two steals.

Coe had a strong start to the game against the nationally-ranked Knights, opening up a 7-5 lead in the first three-plus minutes of the quarter. Wartburg fought back over the next three minutes, using a 9-2 run to take a 12-9 lead after Payton Draper capped the run with five-straight points. Smith ended the run with a layup on Coe's next possession but the Knights answered with a 9-3 spurt to end the quarter, controlling a seven-point lead at the end of one.

The Kohawks immediately cut into the Knight lead, scoring the first seven points of the second quarter to erase the lead and tie the game at 21 with 6:58 left in the half. The squads traded buckets on the next two possessions but again Wartburg ended the quarter on fire, scoring 11 of the final 13 points of the frame to extend its lead to nine points before the break.

Wartburg dominated in the third quarter, putting together a 16-4 outburst in the first seven-plus minutes of the quarter to take complete control of the contest. Despite its largest deficit of the game, the Kohawks scored five of the final eight points of the quarter to trim the Knight lead 19 points after three periods. Coe's offense began to click in the fourth quarter once again, but the Kohawks were unable to hold off the Knights, who outscored Coe 6-5 in the first 2:14 of the quarter to eliminate the chance of a comeback. The Kohawks continued to scrap for the remainder of the contest but they could not cut any further into the lead.

Up Next: The Kohawks will return to the court on Wednesday when they host #13/11 Loras College at 5:30 p.m. inside Kohawk Arena.
