#8 Loras Stifles Women’s Basketball at Home

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team fell 72-54 to #8 Loras College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. The nationally-ranked Duhawks raced out to a comfortable lead early in the first quarter and never looked back en route to their seventh league win and 16 win overall. The loss is Coe's second-straight and drops the Kohawks to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in the American Rivers Conference.

Madeline Wilkins led the Kohawks with 13 points, three rebounds and one assist while Taylor Huber chipped in 10 points, four boards and one block. Coe struggled with the press of Loras, committing 26 turnovers while shooting just 3-of-18 from downtown.

Loras exploded out of the gates ripping off a 10-3 spurt in the first five-plus minutes of the quarter to immediately take control of the game. The Duhawks utilized their up-tempo, pressing-defense to force Coe into multiple turnovers during the stretch, leading to a few easy buckets in the early going. The Kohawks ended the run after a layup from Alyse Southard but Loras continued to dominate, scoring 12 of the final 16 points of the quarter to extend the lead to 22-9 after one.

Coe came out stronger in the second quarter, trading baskets with Loras for the first few minutes of the period but the Kohawks were unable to cut into the deficit. Trailing 30-13 at the 4:52 mark of the second, Coe put together seven-straight points to cut the Loras lead to 10 points with 3:27 left in the half. Again, the Duhawks asserted their dominance towards the end of the period, going on a 9-3 spurt to extend the lead back to 16 at the break.

The Kohawks immediately cut into the Duhawk lead in the third quarter, scoring the first four points of the frame to get within 12 points with plenty of time to play. Despite Coe's hot start, the Duhawks stayed calm, ripping off 11-straight points to push their lead past 20 points for the first time in the contest. Despite the large deficit, the Kohawks continued to fight, using an 8-3 run to cut the lead under 20 with 3:01 left in the quarter but the Duhawks scored five of the final eight points in the frame to push it back to 20 after three.

Up next: Coe returns to action this weekend with another home game in the league with a matchup against Central at 2:00 p.m. at Kohawk Arena.
