WAVERLY, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team fell 75-55 to #7/#10 Wartburg on Wednesday evening. The Knights got off to a hot start in the first quarter and never slowed down, outscoring the Kohawks 24-9 to take immediate control of the contest. The loss drops Coe to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the A-R-C while Wartburg improves to 16-3 and 8-2 in league play.
Jackie Feldt led the Kohawks on the offensive end, tallying 19 points while pulling down three rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
Madeline Wilkins chipped in with 10 points and two assists while seeing 29 minutes of game time while
Jamie Feldt added seven points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
Wartburg opened the contest with seven-straight points thanks to a game-opening 3 from Ally Conrad and back-to-back layups from Tori Hazard and Emma Gerdes. Coe responded well despite the strong start from Wartburg, scoring the next five points in the game to cut the deficit to two points with 6:32 to play in the quarter. The Knights answered right back with a dominant quarter-ending stretch during which they outscored Coe 17-4 to extend its lead 24-9 after one period.
Despite the large deficit, the Kohawks refused to roll over, putting together a 12-8 stretch at the beginning of the second quarter to cut into the Wartburg lead. The Knights got back on track at the 5:03 mark of the quarter, hitting consecutive 3s to push their lead back to 17 points with 3:33 left to play in the half but again Coe stayed tough, scoring seven-straight points to make the score 38-28 with less than two minutes to play in the second. The squads traded empty possessions over the next minute of play but the Knights posted the final basket of the half with a 3 from Gerdes which extended their lead to 41-28 at the break.
The Kohawks again had a strong start to the quarter, this time ripping off a 10-4 spurt to cut the Knights lead to single digits with 6:18 left in the third with
Jackie Feldt scoring five points during the stretch. In spite of Coe's good start, Wartburg flipped the script and dominated for the rest of the quarter. The Knights went on to score 16 of the final 19 points of the frame to push their to 20 points after 30 minutes of action.
Wartburg continued to fire an all cylinders, opening the final quarter of action with a 7-2 spurt to put the contest out of reach with just under seven minutes to play. Coe continued to battle despite the large deficit but the nationally ranked Knights controlled the tempo and wound the clock en route to the victory.
Up next: The Kohawks are off this Saturday and then return to action on February 5 when they host Nebraska Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m.
