Women’s Basketball Wins 79-65 over Nebraska Wesleyan

 CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team bounced back on Wednesday evening with a 79-65 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. The Kohawks got off to a hot start in the opening quarter, outscoring the Prairie Wolves 25-12 in the frame but NWU would not go away. NWU clawed all the way back within five points late in the third quarter but Coe ended the period on a 7-0 run to regain control of the contest. The victory moves Coe to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the A-R-C while the Prairie Wolves drop to 6-13 and 3-9 in the league. 
 
Jackie Feldt again led the Kohawks on offense, tallying 25 points, six dimes and five boards while seeing 31 minutes of game action. Madeline Wilkins also had a terrific night, posting 23 points while going 7-of-13 from downtown. She also added three assists and three rebounds. Jamie Feldt posted her first double-double of the year, scoring 10 points while pulling down 11 boards. She also added four steals, three assists and two blocks in 28 minutes of action. 
 
Coe and Nebraska Wesleyan trade buckets in the opening minutes of the contest as the Kohawks held a slim 7-6 lead with 7:42 left in the period. The Kohawks then opened up an 8-1 stretch to push its lead to seven points. During the run, Coe got a 3 from Wilkins, two buckets from Jackie Feldt and a free throw from Lexi Doyle. Coe continued to dominate for the remainder of the period, ending the quarter on an 11-5 outburst to extend the lead past ten before the end of one. 
 
NWU settled into the second quarter, outscoring the Kohawks 11-8 in the first five-plus minutes of the frame to cut the deficit below 10. Coe remained calm and answered with a run of its own, outscoring Nebraska Wesleyan 7-4 before the halftime break. The run included buckets from Jamie Feldt, Sydney Schroder and Wilkins and pushed the Coe lead to 15 after 20 minutes of play. 
 
The Prairie Wolves continued to fight after the break, going on a 14-7 spurt in the first 3:28 of the quarter to cut further into the Kohawk lead. Coe responded on the next possession with a 3 from Molly Buck to push their lead back over double-digits at 52-41 with just over five minutes left in the third. NWU cut further into the Kohawk lead thanks to another small run, outscoring Coe 8-5 over the next four minutes of the contest to get within five points at the 1:51 mark of the period. Again, the Kohawks stayed cool and ripped off a 7-0 stretch in the final 1:33 of the quarter to extend the lead back to 11 points at the end of 30 minutes.
 
NWU refused to roll over, opening the final quarter of play with an 8-5 spurt which got the Prairie Wolves back within eight points with 6 minutes to play in the game. Wilkins came up clutch for the Kohawks on the next two possessions, connecting on back-to-back 3s to increase Coe's lead back to 12 with 4:43 left. A layup from Jamie Feldt on Coe's next possession put the Kohawks in total control of the contest, taking a 14 point lead which proved to be enough to lock up the victory. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks return to action this weekend in a tough league game away from home as they travel to Dubuque to take on the nationally-ranked Loras College Duhawks at 2:00 p.m.
