Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road to #11 Loras

DUBUQUE Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team fell 73-54 at #11 Loras College on Saturday afternoon. The Duhawks outscored the Kohawks 18-7 in the opening quarter and then slowly padded their lead throughout the rest of the contest en route to their 20th win of the season. The victory moves Coe to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the league while Loras improves to 20-2 and 11-2 in the American Rivers Conference. The Kohawks converted 47.6 percent of their 3s but only shot 38.5 percent overall while the Duhawks shot 49.1 percent from the floor but just 25.0 percent from deep.

Madeline Wilkins led the squad with 15 points, hitting 5-of-11 3s while adding two rebounds and one steal. Jackie Feldt joined Wilkins in double-figures with 13 points, going 3-of-4 from downtown and 5-of-9 overall. She also added two steals, two assists and one rebound.

The Kohawks had a solid opening to the contest, trading buckets with the Duhawks over the first six-plus minutes of the contest. Trailing 7-6, Loras then ripped off a quarter-ending 12-0 spurt which featured three buckets from Marissa Schroeder, as the Duhawks took control prior to the end of the quarter.

The Duhawk run continued in the early portion of the second quarter as they scored the first seven points of the frame to extend the lead to 18 points with 8:38 left in the half. Coe finally ended the run at the 6:51 mark thanks to a layup from Taylor Huber. After a few empty possessions for each team, Wilkins hit back-to-back 3s to cut the deficit to just 10 points with just under five minutes left in the period. Despite Coe's spurt, Loras answered, outscoring Coe 14-7 in the remaining moments of the half to take a 39-22 lead into the locker room.

Coe and Loras traded 3s on their second possessions of the half, but both teams struggled to find the mark in the first few minutes of the period as Loras led 44-25 with seven minutes to play. Despite the offensive struggles, Loras stretched the lead before the end of the quarter, outscoring Coe 6-0 in the final 4:20 of the period to hold a 58-34 after 30 minutes of play. The Duhawks continued to extend their lead early on in the fourth quarter, stretching it to 25 points which proved too much for Coe to overcome.

Up next: Coe is back in action on Wednesday with another road contest as the Kohawks travel to Indianola for a matchup with Simpson at 5:30 p.m.
