DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball team defeated A-R-C foe Dubuque 71-55 on Wednesday evening for its third-straight win which have all come away from home. The Kohawks got off to a hot start and never looked back, outscoring the Spartans 17-8 in the first quarter and 25-16 in the third period. The win moves Coe to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the league while UD drops to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the A-R-C.
Madeline Wilkins paced the Kohawks with 18 points, who connected on a team-high four 3s while collecting two rebounds.
Lexi Doyle and
Jackie Feldt joined Wilkins in double-figures as the pair combined for an additional 27 points.
Destiny Smith (10 boards) and
Taylor Huber (11 boards) both reach double-figure rebounds while
Sydney Schroder and
Jamie Feldt both dished out six assists.
The teams both started slowly in the first few minutes of the game, combining for just three field goals in the first three minutes. Coe then ripped off a 10-0 outburst over a span of nearly six minutes to take a 14-4 lead with just under two minutes to play in the quarter. Dubuque stayed within striking distance despite the scoreless stretch, recording five of the final eight points of the quarter to trail by eight after one.
Coe continued its solid play in the second quarter getting buckets from Doyle,
Jackie Feldt, and
Maddy Wahls during a 7-3 run which extended the lead to 12 points. The Spartans never panicked although they trailed by their largest margin of the game, responding with a 13-4 run to close the quarter and get within three points of the Kohawk lead at the break.
The game of runs continued but this time Coe scored the opening eight points of the quarter to regain a double-digit lead, 36-25. The Kohawks run sustained for nearly two more minutes, outscoring the Spartans 10-4 to take their largest lead of the game at 17 points. Dubuque refused to go away ending the frame on a 12-7 run to cut the deficit to 12 points with one period remaining.
The Kohawks continued to pad their lead throughout the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spartans 7-4 in the early going to push the lead to 15 points with just under eight minutes left in the frame. Coe furthered its lead with another dominant run, scoring 11 of the next 15 points to stretch the lead to 22 points with little time left in the contest.
Up next: Coe will rest this weekend and return to the court next Wednesday at Nebraska Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m.
