Women’s Basketball Wins 68-43 over Buena Vista on Senior Day

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women's basketball won its second-straight game with a convincing 68-43 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon. The Kohawks opened the contest with an early 10-3 lead and never looked back en route to the blowout victory. With the win, Coe improves to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in the A-R-C, jumping into fourth place in the league with two games remaining in the regular season.

Three Kohawks reached double-figures as Madeline Wilkins led the squad with 16 points while Jackie Feldt (13 points) and Alyse Southard (10 points) also eclipsed the milestone. Eight other Kohawks got on the score sheet in the game, providing a balanced attack for Coe on offense. Jackie Feldt also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as seven other Coe players recorded at least four rebounds in the game. Overall the Kohawks were 24-of-46 from the floor and 7-of-18 from downtown while holding BVU to just 28 percent from the floor and 14 percent from 3.

The Kohawks and Beavers both struggled to find the mark at the beginning of the opening quarter but Coe opened up a 10-0 run at the 7:35 mark of the frame. Buena Vista finally ended the run thanks to a layup from Erin Gerke to cut the deficit to five points with 5:11 left in the opening quarter. The Kohawks continued to dominate in the quarter, outscoring the Beavers 7-2 in the remaining minutes to hold a 17-7 lead after one period.

Buena Vista settled into the game in the second quarter, cutting into the Coe lead with an 8-4 run in the opening two-plus minutes of the frame. Jackie Feldt ended the run for the Kohawks with a layup to push the lead back to eight and following an empty Beaver possession Alyse Southard made it 11 with a 3. Again Buena Vista answered, this time with a 3 of its own to stay within striking distance but another 7-0 run from Coe gave it a 15-point lead, its largest of the game with 54 seconds left in the half. Despite the large deficit, Buena Vista scored the final four points of the half to keep things interesting at the break.

After the teams exchanged baskets in the opening few minutes of the third quarter, Coe took control, going on a 9-0 spurt over a 2:32 stretch to take a 20 point lead with just under three minutes left in the period. The Beavers once again scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the lead to 16 after 30 minutes of action. The Kohawks ended all threat of a come back in the first two-plus minutes of the final quarter, ripping off an 8-0 to put the game out of reach for BVU.

Up next: Coe returns to action on Wednesday for its final home game of the regular season when the Kohawks host Dubuque at 5:30 p.m.
