ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College baseball team racked up a season-high 15 hits en route to a 14-5 victory over top-ranked WashU on Saturday afternoon. Despite scoring the opening two runs of the game, Coe trailed 3-2 in the fifth inning but a seven-run sixth put the Kohawks in position for the victory. With the win, Coe improves to 2-2 overall while WashU suffers its first loss of the year and falls to 7-1.
Riley LeGrand led the offensive effort for Coe, going 5-of-6 from the plate with a double, a triple and four RBI while
Jacob Henry collected two RBI and three hits.
Zach Kammin earned his first win of the year, going five innings while surrendering just three hits and one earned run. The senior right-hander also recorded six strikeouts for the Kohawks.
Coe loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but could only muster one early run against WashU. After a few scoreless frames the Kohawks struck again, this time in the top of the fourth, as
TJ Deardorff drove in LeGrand with a single to put Coe up 2-0.
The Bears answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning to flip the switch and take a 3-2 lead into the fifth. Henry led off Coe's half of the fifth with a single and later scored on LeGrand's RBI single as the Kohawks regained a slim lead after 4.5 innings. WashU continued to battle, manufacturing another run in the home half of the fifth inning to retake the lead at 4-3.
Coe's blowup inning finally came in the sixth when it saw seven runs cross the plate. In the inning, the Kohwaks recorded four hits while taking advantage of three walks and a WashU error. The big blow for Coe came off the bat off LeGrand who hit a two-run triple to extend the advantage to 9-4 while putting the game out of reach for the Bears.
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action tomorrow morning with a doubleheader against WashU beginning at 11 a.m.
