CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fell 65-55 to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks, who shot just 6-of-24 from downtown trailed by seven at the half and were unable to overcome the deficit in the final 20 minutes. The loss moves Coe to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in the A-R-C while Dubuque improves to 2-4 and 1-1 in league play.
Jackie Feldt led the team in her first game of the season, posting 17 points, four rebounds and three steals in 28 minutes.
Madeline Wilkins also eclipsed the double-figure mark, scoring 14 points on 4-of-8 from deep. Senior guard
Sydney Schroder finished with just five points but she added seven assists and four steals for Coe.
The Kohawks and Spartans opened the contest trading baskets for the opening few minutes but a 3 from
Molly Buck at the 6:01 mark of the period gave Coe an early five-point lead. Dubuque fought back, scoring six of the next nine points to get within two points of the lead.
Madeline Wilkins ended the run with a crucial 3 off a
Jamie Feldt assist. The teams then traded blows in the remaining two minutes of the quarter as Coe led 19-14 after one.
Dubuque was hot to start the second quarter, opening with a 7-2 spurt and tying the game at 21 with 5:46 left in the half.
Jamie Feldt momentarily gave the Kohawks the lead with an old-fashioned 3-point play but the Spartans stayed hot, ending the period on a 12-1 stretch to hold a 33-25 lead after 20 minutes.
Coe exploded out of the break, scoring the first nine points of the quarter to regain a one-point lead with 6:31 left in the third. Despite the big run, Dubuque hung tough and exchanged baskets with Coe for the next few minutes as the game was tied 41-41 after three quarters.
It was UD who was on fire to begin the fourth, ripping off the initial seven points of the period to regain a 7-point lead with 7:37 to play. Coe responded, scoring five-straight points including three free throws from
Jackie Feldt and a layup from
Molly Buck, which cut the Spartan lead to just one. On the possession following Buck's layup, Dubuque's Miah Smith made converted on a three-point play to increase its lead to five at 51-46. The Kohawks continued to fight and got a 3 from Wilkins to make things interesting down the stretch but UD was solid from the free-throw line and saw out the contest.
Up next: The Kohawks will return to the court on Saturday morning when they take on Simpson College in an A-R-C contest at 11 a.m.
