Women's Basketball's Late Rally Falls Short at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team fell 78-68 to Simpson College on Saturday afternoon at Cowles Fieldhouse. The Kohawks held a narrow one-point lead at the break but the Storm outscored the Kohawks 20-9 in the third quarter to take control of the contest. Coe continued to battle in the fourth quarter but a late run came up just short as the Kohawks dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
 
Jackie Feldt led the Kohawks with 24 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one block in 34 minutes of action. Jamie Feldt added 13 points while collecting five boards and dishing out two assists while Sydney Schroder chipped in with 10 points, five boards and three steals. As a team, the Kohawks shot 41.7 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from downtown while holding the Storm to just 32 percent from beyond.
 
Both teams were hot to start the game as they exchanged baskets over the first few minutes of the contest but a 3 from Jackie Feldt gave Coe a five-point lead at the 7:44 mark of the first. The Kohawks remained hot, putting together a 7-2 spurt to push their lead to seven with 5:08 remaining in the opening frame. The Storm hung tough despite the run, ripping off a 9-2 spurt to tie the game at 16. Coe ended the quarter strong, scoring the final eight points of the frame to hold a 24-16 lead after one. 
 
Simpson battled back at the beginning of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to just three points after a deep-ball from Kia Rasmussen with 6:25 left in the half. Following the ensuing Kohawk possession, Rasmussen again converted on a long-ball to tie the game at 30 with just over five minutes in the second. The squads settled into the contest and traded buckets for the next few minutes but a 3 from Jamie Feldt pushed the Coe lead to four with under a minute left in the frame. The Storm got the final say of the half though, thanks to a 3 from Cameron Kincaid, pulling Simpson within one at the break.
 
The Storm dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Kohawks 20-9 in the frame while shooting 7-of-16 from the field. Jackie Feldt started the scoring in the period but a jumper but Simpson scored the next nine points of the contest to take a six-point lead. The Storm continued to build upon their lead over the remaining moments of the frame, increasing it to 12 with 23 seconds left in the period. A layup from Molly Buck just before time expired cut the Kohawk deficit to 10 with one quarter to play.
 
The Kohawks battled all the way back in the third quarter, scoring 12 of the opening 13 points to tie the score at 63 with 3:52 left to play. Simpson remained cool and responded to the Kohawk run, ripping off an 11-3 run which was capped off by a 3-pointer from Rasmussen. Coe continued to fight for the remaining seconds of the game but Simpson converted on its free throws to secure the victory.  
 
Up next: The Kohawks will be back on the floor on Wednesday evening when they host the Wartburg College Knights at 5:30 p.m.
