Volleyball Splits a Pair of Matches Against Elmhurst and John Carroll

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Coe College volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Friday evening, falling 3-2 to Elmhurst University before sweeping John Carroll 3-0 in the nightcap. The Kohawks and Blue Jays traded set victories back and forth in the first four but Elmhurst dominated the fifth set to secure a 3-2 victory. Coe bounced back in its second match, sweeping John Carroll 3-0 as it hit .269 with 10 service aces. The split moves the Kohawks to 13-6 on the season while they remain 3-0 in league play.

Match Facts
  • Elmhurst dominated the opening set thanks to a .571 attacking percentage which netted 18 kills and just two errors. The Blue Jays held the Kohawks to just .111 hitting percentage as they recorded seven kills and four errors. 
  • Coe bounced back in the second set to earn a 25-22 victory, tying the match at one set apiece. The Coe defense held Elmhurst to 12 kills and a .130 attack percentage as the Blue Jays had six errors in the second frame. 
  • The back and forth action continued in the third set as Elmhurst edged Coe 26-24 to regain the lead in the match. The Blue Jays racked up 18 kills in the set and posted a .245 hitting percentage while the Kohawks piled up seven errors in the third frame. 
  • Both teams struggled on offense in the fourth set, combining for 17 errors in the frame as the Kohawks pulled out a 25-23 victory. Despite hitting just .07 in the frame, Coe scored six of the final eight points of the set to even the match at two. 
  • Elmhurst jumped out to an early 11-2 lead thanks to five straight points in the frame. The Blue Jays allowed the Kohawks to score three consecutive points as they cut the lead to seven but the hosts managed to score four of the final seven points of the match to clinch the victory.

  • The Kohawks earned a 25-22 victory in the first set of the match, racking up 16 kills and four aces in the frame. The Blue Streak had a solid .243 attack percentage but the Kohawks scored four of the final six points to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • Coe stretched its lead to 2-0 in the second set, earning a 25-20 victory thanks to hitting. 263 while registering three service aces. Kinsie Zinnel had two of the Kohawk aces as she recorded back-to-back points late in the frame. 
  • The Kohawks continued to cruise in the third set, earning a 25-19 victory over the Blue Streak to secure the sweep. Coe was on fire in the frame, hitting .394 while posting 17 kills to just four errors. The squad also recorded three service aces in the set as Madi Parson, Majda Suljic and Kate Tidman all recorded one in the frame to lead the Kohawks to victory. 
Up next: Coe will finish off competition at the Elmhurst College Invitational on Saturday with matchups against Kalamazoo and Alma.
