Volleyball Earns Two Non-Conference Victories on Saturday over Kalamazoo & Alma

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Coe College volleyball team swept a set of matches on Saturday, defeating Kalamazoo and Alma 3-0 to finish with a 3-1 record at the Elmhurst University Invitational. The Kohawks opened the day with a dominant performance against the Hornets, defeating them 25-15, 25-16 and 25-15. Coe faced a tougher test in the second match of the day, winning 25-22, 25-11 and 25-22 over Alma to secure a perfect record for the day. The results improve the Kohawks to 15-6 overall while they remain 3-0 in the American Rivers Conference.

Match Facts
  • The Kohawks dominated the first match of the day, posting a .341 hitting percentage while holding the Hornets to -.013. Overall, Coe finished with nine aces, six blocks and 40 digs while Kalamazoo earned just 27 total points. It was a balanced effort on offense for Coe which had four players finish with seven-plus kills as Kate Tidman, Madi Parson, Gracie Urbatsch and Grace Lueken were key pieces of the offense. 
  • Coe started well from the jump, earning a 25-15 victory in the first set while hitting .385 with 12 kills and just two errors. The Kohawks scored six of the final nine points of the frame to secure the match-opening victory. 
  • The squad continued to click in the second set, hitting at a .370 clip while holding Kalamazoo into four kills. Despite committing five errors, the Kohawks registered a match-high 15 kills while earning a 25-16 victory to go up 2-0. 
  • Coe finished off Kalamazoo in the third set of the match, picking up a 25-15 victory while hitting .281 in the frame. The Hornets had six kills and six errors in the set while the Kohawks had five aces including three from Kinsie Zinnel.

Match Facts
  • The Kohawks and Scots traded points early on in the first set of the match but Coe held a narrow 22-17 lead after a pair of aces from Elli Teeple. Alma managed to get within two points of the lead, cutting the score to 24-22 but a kill from Tidman gave Coe a 1-0 lead in the match. 
  • Coe dominated the second set, hitting .321 while holding Alma to just -.042 attack percentage. The Kohawks had just four errors as opposed to 13 kills while the Scots had their match-high five errors. Coe opened up an early 12-3 advantage and managed to hold on to victory despite a comeback attempt from Alma.
  • The third set of the match was tighter as Coe pulled out a 25-22 victory in the final frame to earn a 3-0 victory. Despite hitting just .163, the Kohawks earned the victory while holding the Scots to a .091 clip with five errors. 
  • Parson and Tidman paced the team offensively, finishing with 15 kills each to lead the team while Urbatsch and Lueken posted six and five kills respectively. The team also posted 13 service aces as Parson led the team with four while Zinnel added three. 
Up next: Coe will return to the court this week on Friday, October 8 as it heads to Storm Lake for an A-R-C matchup at Buena Vista.
