UW-La Crosse Takes Down Women’s Basketball on Wednesday Evening

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Coe College women's basketball team suffered a 73-44 defeat on the road at Wisconsin-La Crosse on Wednesday evening. The Kohawks trailed by just four after one quarter but the Eagles outscored the visitors 24-6 in the second quarter en route to the victory. Coe was led by Kaalyn Petersen who posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds as the sophomore shot 5-of-10 from the floor. The loss drops the Kohawks to 2-2 overall while the Eagles improve 4-0 on the season.

Game Facts
  • The hosts scored the opening bucket of the game, getting a layup just 18 seconds into the contest but a layup from Molly Buck tied the score for Coe. The teams battled back and forth for a majority of the first period but UWL ended the frame with three-straight points as it held a narrow 18-14 lead after 10 minutes. 
  • Both teams struggled in the first few minutes of the second quarter but the Eagles used three-straight 3s to stretch their lead to double-digits with just under seven minutes left in the half. The run continued for UW-La Crosse as it answered another Buck layup with an 11-0 stretch, extending the lead to 22 points at the 2:10 mark of the quarter. Coe finally broke the scoreless stretch with 1:33 left in the half as Katie Wilhelmi converted one of two from the line but the Eagles led by 22 at the break. 
  • Coe immediately cut into the lead to start the third quarter, getting a 3 from Buck and a layup from Petersen to make it 44-25 but the Kohawks then went cold from the floor, failing to register a point until the 4:23 mark of the period. During the drought, the Eagles extended their lead to 23 points with four-consecutive points to go in front 48-25 with 7:19 remaining in the third. 
  • Coe broke the scoreless stretch under the five-minute mark, getting back-to-back buckets from Buck and Petersen to get the lead back under 20. The hosts ended the quarter on a small 6-4 run to push their lead back to 21 with one quarter to play. The lead quickly grew in the fourth quarter for UWL as it opened with a 12-4 stretch in the quarter to put the game out of reach for the Kohawks. 
Up next: Coe will return to the floor on Sunday, November 21 when it hosts Illinois College at Kohawk Arena at 2 PM.
