Women’s Basketball Falls to Loras in A-R-C Home Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team dropped its American Rivers Conference home opener on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena, falling 64-52 to the Loras College Duhawks. Loras jumped out to a double-digit lead in the opening half, using an 11-0 run at the end of the second quarter to grab the lead. Coe battled back in the third and fourth quarters, cutting its deficit to just two points with over 3:30 to play in the game but Loras ended the game on a 13-3 run to grab the victory. The loss drops the Kohawks to 3-4 on the year and 0-1 in the American Rivers Conference while Loras improves to 4-2 and 1-1 in league action. 
 
Ellie Wisner led the offensive effort for Coe, recording 15 points in the game as she was 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kaalyn Petersen and Molly Buck also eclipsed the double-figure mark for the Kohawks, posting 11 points each while Petersen chipped in with 12 boards for her fourth double-double of the season.

Game Facts
  • The Duhawks jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring five consecutive points to begin the game. Alyse Southard got Coe on the board one minute into the game, connecting on a pull-up jumper to get the Kohawks within three points. Loras extended its lead back to five on the next possession but Coe answered with five-straight points including a 3 from Ellie Wisner as the hosts tied the game at seven. 
  • The Duhawks then ripped off a 6-0 spurt as forward Sami Martin scored four points along the way to regain the advantage. The Kohawks continued to fight back in the game, ending the frame with a 10-7 run to cut the deficit to just three as Molly Buck hit a buzzer-beating 3 to make it 20-17. 
  • Coe cut further into the lead in the first half of the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 6-4 to get within one point at 24-23. Loras regained control of the game before the end of the first half, using a quarter-ending 11-0 spurt to take a 35-23 advantage over the hosts into the break.
  • The Kohawks quickly cut the lead to single-digits in the third quarter, opening the period with an 8-2 spurt which featured 3s from Southard and Buck as Coe made it 37-31 with just over five minutes left in the frame. The teams settled into the period at this point, trading baskets for the remaining minutes of the period as the Duhawks held a 45-39 lead after three. 
  • Coe slashed the lead further in the first two-plus minutes of the fourth quarter, using a 6-2 run to make it 47-45 with 7:22 to play in the game. The squads battled back-and-forth over the next four minutes of the game but a layup from Kaalyn Petersen cut the visitor's lead to just one point with 2:54 remaining. Loras settled down over the final few moments of the game, connecting on back-to-back baskets to regain a six-point lead with little time remaining. Coe went cold on offense while Loras converted on some key free throws in the final minute-plus of the game as the Duhawks secured the victory. 
Up next: Coe will return to Kohawk Arena for its next matchup on Saturday, December 4 when it welcomes Simpson College at 2 PM.
