Women's Basketball Defeats Central After Dominant Opening Quarter

PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon and secured its first A-R-C victory of the season, taking down the Central College Dutch 56-46. The Kohawks opened the game with a dominant first quarter where they outscored the Dutch 24-5 and fought off a second-half comeback attempt from the hosts to secure their first conference win of the season. The victory moves Coe to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the A-R-C while Central drops to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

Sophomore forward Kaalyn Petersen led the way for Coe, posting 12 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals as Petersen recorded her sixth double-double of the season. It was a balanced effort from the rest of the Coe offense with eight other Kohawks registering two points in the game but Ellie Wisner (nine points), Alyse Southard (eight points) and Theo Mba (eight points) added solid offensive production. Molly Buck finished with just six total points in the game but helped Coe with a team-high four assists while grabbing seven boards for the Kohawks.

Game Facts
  • The Kohawks were on fire in the opening quarter, shooting 10-21 from the field and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc en route to the dominant period. The visitors scored 17 of the first 18 points of the game to quickly take a double-digit lead in the contest as Central's first bucket didn't come until the 3:09 mark of the period. The Dutch converted back-to-back buckets to make it 17-5 with 2:39 left in the first but Coe ended with a 7-0 stretch to grab a 19-point advantage after one.
  • The lead grew in the first two minutes of the second quarter for the Kohawks as Petersen converted a layup to make it 28-8 with just over eight minutes left in the half. Central slowly clawed back into the game over the final moments of the quarter, ending the period on an 11-5 run to close the gap to 14 points at the break.
  • Coe pushed the lead back past 15 early in the third, getting a 3 from Southard to make it 39-23 with 7:24 to play in the third. The teams then battled back and forth for the next few minutes of the period but four-straight points for Coe gave it its largest lead at 46-24 with just over six minutes left in the period. Central refused to go away despite the deficit, ending the period with a 13-1 spurt to quickly pull within 10 points of Coe's lead.
  • The teams had a slow start to the final period but a 3 from the Dutch made it an eight-point game with 8:01 remaining. Coe answered with four consecutive points to momentarily stop the run pushing its lead back to 12 but Central answered with five in a row to make it 52-45. Coe got a bucket from Buck on its ensuing possession to regain a nine-point advantage prior to Central's last point of the game with just over 3:30 to play. Despite the large amount of time remaining both teams went cold for the final few moments as Coe hung on to secure its first league win.
Up next: Coe is back on the court on Wednesday, December 15 when it hosts Cornell College in a non-conference matchup at 5:30 PM.
