Women's Basketball Takes Down Buena Vista on the Road Behind Strong Fourth Quarter

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team took down Buena Vista University 59-46 on Saturday evening. The Kohawks led 25-23 at the halftime break but trailed by one point after three quarters. Coe then outscored BVU 24-9 in the final quarter en route to the victory. It was another milestone evening for a Kohawk as Madeline Wilkins scored 16 points, eclipsing the 1,000 point-mark for her career. Win the victory, Coe improves to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league while BVU drops to 1-3 overall and in the league.

Wilkins was joined by Jamie Feldt, who also finished with 16 points while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jackie Feldt posted 12 points, seven boards, six assists, one steal and one block while Molly Buck reached double-figures with 13 from the bench. Kaalyn Petersen played in 18 minutes for Coe and pulled down a team-high nine boards.

Coe and BV got off to a slow start, trading a few baskets over the early moments of the first quarter but the Kohawks used a 7-2 run to take a 13-7 lead with 3:01 left in the period. Following a Beaver layup, Coe ripped off five-straight points including a 3 from Buck to take its largest lead at 18-9. Buena Vista would score the final points of the quarter at the charity stripe to cut the score to 18-11 after one.

The scoring troubles continued in the second quarter for both teams as they combined for just one bucket in the first three-plus minutes of play, but a layup from Wilkins gave Coe a 20-13 lead at the 6:33 mark of the second. The Beavers then began a run to end the quarter which saw them outscore the Kohawks 10-5 to get within two points at the end of two quarters.

Once again the teams were tight to open the third, trading baskets for the opening five-plus minutes. Jackie Feldt pushed Coe's lead back to two-points at the free throw line with under four minutes to go in the period but a 3-pointer for Jayleen Cole gave the Beavers a slim one-point lead with just over 2:30 remaining. Jamie Feldt then split a pair of free throws, tying the game at 35 but two free throws of their own gave the Beavers a two-point lead after three quarters.

Coe came to life early in the fourth quarter, ripping off a 15-4 outburst in the opening five minutes of play to flip the script and take a 50-41 lead. Following a few empty sequences, the Beavers cut into the lead thanks to a layup from Erin Streit but a jumper from Jamie Feldt pushed the lead back to nine with under two minutes to play. Streit then earned a pair of free throws on the following possession, of which she made one but Wilkins iced the game on Coe's next chance with a 3 to extend the lead to 11 with 51 seconds to play.

Up next: The Kohawks will return to the court on Wednesday, February 24th when they travel to Decorah for an A-R-C matchup with Luther College.
