CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team advanced to the A-R-C Championship game for the first time since 2014 on Thursday night behind a 78-59 victory over six-seeded Loras College. The Kohawks used a dominant second quarter in which they outscored the Duhawks 15-5 to take control of the contest. Loras continued to fight in the final two periods but Coe managed the pressure to ensure the victory. The Kohawks improve to 9-3 overall while the Loras ends its season 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Jackie Feldt came up one point shy of tying her career-high on Thursday, recording 30 points in the victory. The senior added six rebounds, four steals and one assist while playing 36 minutes.
Jamie Feldt and
Sydney Schroder also reached double-figures for Coe, recording 11 and 10 points respectively. Feldt chipped in with six boards, three steals, two blocks and two assists while Schroder added seven boards, five assists and four steals.
Madeline Wilkins scored nine points, going 3-of-6 from downtown.
The Kohawks and Duhawks fought back-and-forth to open the contest, trading mini-runs in the first two minutes. Loras then outscored Coe 5-2 over the next minute to take a three-point lead with 6:22 left in the frame. Coach Waskow's team then turned on the pressure, ripping off a 13-2 outburst during a five minute stretch where
Jackie Feldt had nine points. Loras scored the final six points of the quarter to cut the deficit to just two points after one period.
Loras scored the first two points of the second quarter, tying the score at 20 but it was Coe who owned the period. After nearly three scoreless minutes, the Kohawks ripped-off a quarter-ending 15-3 spurt which featured eight points from
Jackie Feldt. During the stretch, Coe shot 6-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-1 from downtown as it led 57-43 at the break.
Jackie Feldt opened the third quarter with a pair of free throws but Loras fought back, using a 12-7 run to cut the deficit to just nine points with 5:09 remaining in the period. Coe finally settled into the period, going on a 13-8 period-ending run to regain control of the contest. Coach Waskow's squad got buckets from
Jamie Feldt, Molly Buck, Jackie Feldt and
Alyse Southard during the run.
The Kohawks continued to dominate early in the fourth quarter, using a 10-2 stretch to push their lead to 22 points. Loras refused to go away despite the large deficit but Coe managed the clock and the Duhawk press to advance to the A-R-C Championship.
Up next: The Kohawks advance to the American Rivers Conference Championship game where they will face top-seeded Simpson College in Indianola on Saturday at 6 p.m.
