CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College women's basketball team took down Buena Vista 73-52 in the quarterfinals of the A-R-C tournament on Tuesday evening, stretching its winning-streak to seven-straight games. The Kohawks got off to a slow start, trailing by as many as ten points in the first quarter but they fought back to take a 43-30 lead into the break. Coe stretched its lead early in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to 18 points prior to seeing out the win in the fourth. The win moves the Kohawks to 8-3 overall while the Beavers fall to 2-7.
The Kohawks were led by a trio of double-figure scorers, as
Molly Buck,
Jackie Feldt and
Madeline Wilkins all reached the milestone. Buck poured in a career-high 19 points to lead the team, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and a torrid 5-of-9 from downtown. Feldt added 18 points, four rebounds and one assist while Wilkins finished with 15 points, six boards and two dimes.
Sydney Schroder ran the offense for Coe, producing eight assists while adding three steals and two blocks.
Buena Vista was on fire to start the game, opening up a 13-3 lead before the midway-point of the first quarter. Coe woke up following a timeout from Coach Waskow, ending the quarter with a 14-1 outburst which included 3s from
Jamie Feldt, Buck and Wilkins. During the quarter, Coe went 4-of-7 from downtown while Buena Vista was just 4-of-14 from the floor.
The Kohawks and Beavers settled into the contest early in the second quarter, trading blows for the first few minutes of the frame. Coe pushed its lead to five points thanks to a layup from
Mady Wahls, which kickstarted an 11-0 spurt to give Coe a 38-22 lead with 3:35 left in the half. The Beavers finally stopped the run but they were unable to make a significant dent in the Kohawk lead prior to half as they trailed 43-30 after 20 minutes.
Coe started the third quarter hot, scoring seven of the first 11 points of the quarter to push the lead to 16 points. BVU settled into the contest and began trading buckets with Coe but the Beavers were unable to put stops together to cut into the deficit and they still trailed by 18 after three quarters. The Kohawks opened the fourth quarter with a 12-5 outburst, increasing the lead to 25 while putting the contest out of reach for the Beavers.
Up next: The Kohawks advance to the American Rivers Conference tournament semifinals where they will face the winner of the Loras and Wartburg game on Thursday evening at Kohawk Arena.
